Mutations aren't only positive and natural selection favors the positive mutations while eliminating negative ones as they are a detriment to the organism. It really comes down to chance and what the results are of the genetic drift resulting from sexual reproduction. I see your point and I understand how it is valid in almost all organisms as diversity is necessary for adaptation and evolution but humans are unique as our intelligence allows us to adapt to our environment faster than evolution would allow (ex: how humans of the same species live on every continent on the planet without major genetic differences). 1
