What would the world be like today if Al Gore had won in 2000?

I think about this all the time, because it was SO close.

Everyone's carbon emissions would be zero, there would be no tension throughout the world, everyone would have enough food and water, 9/11 wouldn't have happened, there would be no war in Iraq or Afghanistan, every American would be entitled to free universal healthcare with no increase in taxation, our economy would be booming, the government would be a friendly and approachable entity, Al Gore would license the Internet and be the richest man in the world, and the Prius would be the number-one selling car in the country.

Seriously, though, I don't really think it would be that much different than today, except it would be cool to hate Al Gore and the Republican party would have won the '08 election.

Haha. For a second I thought you were serious. That would have made me SO pissed. But the last bit redeemed the argument. ;)

No, I'm not that guy. The 'richest man in the world' part should have made the joke. I thought it was funny. ;)

If Al Gore had won in 2000 I do not believe anything would be much different. You can say all the terrible things about Bush but after 9/11 everything seemed so vulnerable but there was not another terrorist attack on US soil after 9/11. I do not know if Gore would have handled that situation well ( 9/11 ), all I do know is that all of the problems with the world would be the same. Just some small differences.

Side: not much different

If Al Gore had been president for, at least, '00 to '04, the world would be a very different place. In America, there would be laws saying things like, "If it is above negative 2 degrees where you live, you may not turn up the thermostat above 70". The world would have been pretty different.

Wow, alot of bs arguements so far.

1. Gore would have listened to the memo Clinton sent Bush saying Osama was a threat, instead of ignoring it, and so, yeah, there is a very good chance 9-11 would not have happened.

2. Had 9-11 happened, we would have continued concentrating on Afghanistan instead of running off to Iraq for absolutely no reason. Meaning their country would probably not be falling apart now, we may have apprehended Osama by now, and there would be several thousand U.S. troops alive instead of dead.

3. While the housing bubble would have still burst, Gore would not have lifted all of the oversight that Bush lifted on the financial industry, and so our economy would not be nearly as bad as it currently is.

4. We could very well have Universal Healthcare by now. Meaning the 50 million uninsured would now have insurance, and the average American would be paying thousands less a year for healthcare, and business would be healthier because vast percentages of their profits would not be wasted in a completely for-profit healthcare scam.

5. Gore would not have squandered the greatest surplus on a bogus war, and tax cuts that only worked for the rich and did nothing to help the economy.

6. Stem cell research would be 8 years ahead of where it is now. Meaning that hundreds of thousands of people who have died from things stem cell research could have cured would be alive.

7. The entire world would not think we're a bunch of arrogant assholes.

8. Gore would have actually helped the Katrina victims, instead of paying lip service and doing photo ops.

9. And yeah, we would be 8 years further along in clean energy and energy independance.

and while "haha he wants us to freeze, haha" is so funny, whoever's message that was above... Yeah comedian, meanwhile we're on the Middle East's titty like a battered crack whore and her pimp.

But no, Gore's the pussy for wanting clean energy...

Anyone who thinks a President does not matter has not been alive for the last 8 years.

I agree with you on the science part (and other parts, but it's complicated... I don't want to get into that now).

Stem cell research could have been doing amazing things for us if we would have pursued it... or if we would have been allowed to pursue it. People could be getting limbs regrown, you know? There could have been a cure for so many illnesses... Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Cancer, we squandered so much time.

And I agree with you on clean energy. WTF?!? I mean, why aren't we on this stuff by now?!? There is no excuse I will accept. It is completely ridiculous that Americans are still just fine with buying their oil from the people that hate them. Do they realize that we are funding them? They must not. The US is one of the most blessed countries on Earth as far as renewable resources go; we have wind, we have water, we have sun, we have tides, we have everything!!!

But no. That's not OK, for some reason. We have to do it the hard way.

1. You are seriously saying that 9/11 is Bush's fault? Wow, I was under the impression that it was Osama's fault. But hey he's not a republican so lets not blame him. Every time people like you say things like that Osama wins.

2. 9-11 would have happened. Gore would probably not have even gone to war at all, because war isn't popular.

4."We could very well have Universal Healthcare by now."

And that would be a good thing? No.

7. "The entire world would not think we're a bunch of arrogant assholes."

False, I hate when people say that. It is so untrue. And I'm not talking about the world wide Obama mania, That is love for him not America. Which I find very strange. Maybe it's because he's not white.

I know, reading comprehension is bitch. Ignoring the memo that said Osama was determined to attack was Bush's fault.

"We could very well have Universal Healthcare by now."

And that would be a good thing? No.

I'm not sure how entrenched in right wing media you are, but if you pull your head out of that smelly ass for a moment you can look at every country with similar systems to the one adopted, and every country without. Those with a for-profit health system pay more for worse care. Those with a form of Universal Healthcare pay less money for better care. Those are just the facts. It works better.

Iraq was an arrogant asshole move. We had inspectors from around the world telling us there were no WMDs but we ignored it because they aren't american. The war wasn't even 1/3 of the way over and Bush flew onto a battleship in a fucking halloween costume talking about victory. There was no exit plan, there was no strategy for helping the country after we ripped it apart, we went in there, took a shit, and didn't clean it up... and there was not even a reason to be there to start with.

But that's only part of it. The other part is the flag waving, freedom fries, all of that bullshit from people on the right almost entirely who equate patriotism with hatred for stuff not like them. All muslims are terrorists--well so what 1/3 of the earth's population is a terrorist? If you don't call it Christmas you hate america. WTF does christmas have to do with any free country on earth? If you think science is a good idea your the stupid one. If you think a cleaner more pleasant environment would be a good thing you're a pussy. If you think gay people should have the exact same constitutional rights as everyone else you must be a fag sinner god-hater and of course being a fag sinner means you are unamerican.

So yeah, Bush and the right wing did, have in the past even before then, and the tiny tea party faction is doing so again, leading america down paths which appear to all sane outsiders as arrogant assholes, and usually stupid arrogant assholes.

Side: Worse

I don't think Al Gore would have gotten this country involved in two wars.
