What would you like science to create?

I got this idea from Joe's post about stopping technology advancement. Some of us don't think technology or science should stall, therefore, I'm curious of what you would like science and technology to advance to? Use your imagination. (It might actually happen before you die).

I want a bionic eye, that links to the brain. So it would be like an iPhone, but inside your head a operated by brain power. You could be just sitting there staring off into space, searching the internet or anything. That way, anytime you need to know something... you google it.

Doctors would be able to link into cameras inside patients, and look up medical information in seconds.

Scientists would be able to participate in think tanks as a massive chatroom inside their heads.

You could watch porn with your eyes closed!

This is science.

Believe it or not, you've almost described exactly the area of study that I would like to follow for my PhD.

What you are describing is called augmented reality, which essentially equates to the seamless real-time integration of real-world and computational information. The examples you've already stated are fantastic for the real world applications of augmented reality technology, however the possiblities are absolutely endless.

If I were ever to get the oppotunity to follow this area of study, the real-world application I'd research would be contextual information driven by image processing and recognition. Imagine wearing a contact lense that, when you see the face of someone you know, seamlessly overlays the image with personal information about that person; likes, dislikes, contact information, facts such as birthdays and family members, etc. Or similarly, has the ability to process useful information about any visible objects; the date a certain building was constructed, compared prices for a pair of shoes you've seen that you like, all instantly.

Combined with some kind of wireless technology built into every day life, such as RFID chips in consumables, instantly connectable bluetooth-esque devices between humans, etc, augmented reality will be the most important scientific advancement until (if even possible) the invention of strong AI.

Once the technology is in place, each one of us will become a node in a worldwide 'internet.' This is, indeed, science.

I would think it would have to be an entire eye ball in it's primitive state, but if eventually it could be a contact screen it would be awesome!

You'd probably have to have something installed inside the brain, though, with a microscopic fiber cables that stay installed in along the optic nerves and some sort of a port (like a computer USB cord) that sits on the surface of the eye. And when you put the contact in, it connects to the microscopic port and powers on as a screen. That way you don't have to sacrifice your natural eyesight in order to obtain these bionic capabilities.

However if you spend a lot of time focusing that closely, your eyesight would suffer.

I miss being scientific. I was in all the AP science classes in high school... then I went into business. :(

More thoughts!

It could be a tiny bluetooth type receiver that implants in your brain and the real computer could be implanted somewhere else in your body. Somewhere fleshy and accessible so that you could have some sort of port, like in the matrix, for downloads and updates. The brain doesn't have enough empty space to hold a computer.

What I'm thinking of is similar to this, but not with the watching porn part though. >.<

People who can't draw would be able to fulfill their interest in drawing, in some sort of way, since our imagination is well, imaginative enough to let us create graphics that, for non-artistic people, are hard to draw out.

Think of the advances in photography this could be! Images can be captured in just that second, creating wonders. Often, we want to capture a moving object with the camera, but do not have the skill to do that. With this bionic eye, we can do these stuff!

I think almost everything wonderful can be done with the bionic eye. But the problem is, how do you manage to get the brain to actually send the information to this 'bionic' eye and be connected to it in the first place?

Another 'thing' that I want science to create is the ability to shape-shift. Although it might be linked to other ethical problems and crime problems, but still, let's focus on the positive aspects. With the ability or gene to shape-shift, we can actually be whoever we want! Defeating the purpose for any artificial beauty products or modifications such as cosmetic surgery and make-up. People with low self-esteem levels wouldn't want to seek cosmetic surgery or slather themselves with a thick layer of make-up. Or dye their hair and damage it. Wouldn't it be great to be able to change yourself at will? Of course, this is a really materialistic idea, and that there are more cons than pros, but it's a nice ability to have!^^

I like genetic engineering. Imagine having a real eagle's eyes or a blood hound's sense of smell, or the cuttle fish's ability to change color, or a very dexterous tail! Talk about getting a piece of tail :)

Oh, and a third breast may help out octo-mom quite a bit too.

Oh, and a horse's..... uh...., never mind ;)

"Oh, and a horse's..... uh...." .... legs! They'd help you to run fast! lol. I'm sure you were heading for that. ;)

There are a lot of inventions I want. Let's see...

-I want cars that will get hooked up to the highway and all travel at the same speed without human control and all you have to do it plug in your exit and it will take you.

-I want flying cars as well.

-I want personal space travel. That'd be cool.

-I want personal jetpacks. Those are fun.

-I want to see a cure for many different incurable diseases, like diabetes and AIDS.

And I'm sure there are more. :)

Hey! That car idea sounds awesome! We could just friggin read and stuff. And there'd hardly be accidents because every car would move at the same rate. Pretty badass. That'd cost a ton of money though. haha.

Strong AI. Once we have that everything else will be trivial.

What's AI?

I added a link to my original argument, but basically strong a.i. means artificial intelligence (i.e. computer brains) that can do everything humans can do.

Strong AI would be fantastic, and probably one of most important technological achievements ever. However, I fear we're still nowhere near that goal at the moment.

I agree. I think we first need to make tools that assist and enhance human thinking and communication. Once we have tools like this, I think the law of accelerating returns will take over and we'll be able to solve very hard problems like strong AI a lot sooner than most people are expecting.

I'm actually working on stuff along these lines -- tools to make programming easier. One open source project I've been participating in is the leo editor. I recommend checking it out if you're interested in this sort of thing.

I don't know about that.. Haven't you seen the matrix? Or any other Hollywood movie where AI conveniently leads to fighting robots and explosions? (;

in order of importance:

1. light saber

2. flying car

3. clean and renewable energy sources, that can run every vehicle and home (which they have, but just haven't implemented for some lame reason)

Like I said in the other debate I want healthy food that tastes really good.

For example broccoli that tastes like milk chocolate. That way it could be easier to eat healthy.

Haha, gross. Brocolli is yummy as it is. Mushrooms on the other hand... eh. Ya know if you just start eating the healthy stuff for a week and avoiding junk, your taste buds with adjust to the new food and you'll start to like it. I read, somewhere, that our taste buds change about every 10 days. Not sure if it's completely true or not though.

The ability to jump between dimensions would be wonderful. I would also love the ability to change my atomic composition. These are two things I would love for science to produce. That as well as getting rid of the need to excrete and consume food. It would be pretty amazing to absorb energy. Just a few thoughts...

Side: healthy food that tastes really good

Also, control of magnetism and electromagnetism. Specifically in the use of propulsion. Even more specifically for space travel. (I used to spend hours as a kid drawing up designs for space propulsion reliant upon magnetism.)

You can edit your posts to add stuff.

The only reason I didn't edit my post above is because the other person and I were both online and posting actively, I didn't want to confuse him. Otherwise I would have edited my post to add the extra stuff.
