What would you tax?
If you had the chance to put up a single tax or introduce one new tax, what would it be on and why?

I like New York's plan to tax sodas. The tax is not going to make me stop buying soda altogether, but it will make me slow down my consumption, which is good. Also, for the sodas I would still buy, the tax would go to help those in hospitals! :) But this should evolve to go toward the entire country and toward all junk food. Side: all junk food

Depends what the goal is. Just what brings in the most money or what's the better policy? I would suspect taxing junk food might bring in more money. But in order to tax recreational drugs they would have to be legalized and regulated, and since wasting resources on the "war on drugs" is idiotic that's better policy. Side: all junk food
The value of land and natural resources. Doing this would not take from anyone something he had created, but merely recycle for community purposes value created by the community. I'd avoid taxing that which individuals or corporations create -- goods and services, houses and other buildings, wages. Taxing these things is both unjust and unwise; taxing them destroys jobs, destroys incentives, burdens the economy. Taxing things in scarce or finite supply actually brings the selling price down, making them affordable to those who will use them, rather than held out of use by speculators who are hoping for or expecting a price rise.
