When DADT is repealed...
what happens in respect to the gay service member's spouses? As a gay couple they can't marry, or even register as domestic partners, in all states.
Living in San Diego, I know a lot of couples with at least one partner in the military, some of whom are gay. The heterosexual couples who are married, receive many benefits: higher pay, housing assistance, health benefits, education assistance, et cetera. It's given to them, it's a right.
How do we make sure those benefits are extended to the spouses of gay military?
Repeal the "Defense of Marriage Act." But first, I think the strategy is to win the right to marry at the state level. That strategy has had mixed results. But with more success in more states, it should be easier to overturn the federal law. Also, the State Department is now extending benefits to same-sex partners it affords married folk. Pehaps the military could do the same. Side: Don't Discriminate - Don't Surrender

And God said to Jake, "Jake, my son, I will you to downvote every argument that disagrees with you and upvote every argument that does not directly disagree with you, even if that argument is retarded." And Jake said "Duhuh." Civil unions aren't even recognized nationally! And wont be just because DADT is repealed. And don't even grant every single right marriage does. They are simply an unacceptable alternative. Side: Civil Unions
