When should the human fetus have rights? Tell me your belief.

I say at 20 weeks after conception, because he or she cannot survive earlier.

A fetus is a separate living entity at the moment of conception.

It should have the rights of such an entity at this time.

Which right includes the right to life.

I do not believe the mother, or the father, have the right to murder a child, regardless of the child's age or state of development.

Children are innocent, and the life of an innocent is worth more than the life of any another. If it was meant to die, it would have died naturally, not because someone desired to kill it.

I can understand your sentiment, but I support choice until 20 weeks after conception. Please do not take this the wrong way.

Seven years old.

You realize this ties into abortion right? meaning also the right to not be aborted. lol

My belief is when it's outside of the mother surviving.

If it can live at conception so be it, if she doesn't want it, get it out of there and let it live on some machine, but if it can't she shouldn't be forced to carry it.

So 40 weeks after conception? .

Whenever it can live outside the mother. If they can hook it up to a machine literally at conception then that's when it should have it's own rights, but only after it can live outside the mother.

The point the fetus obtains it's own unique sentience and conscious capabilities.

When would that be? .

I hear it has been theorized to be most likely between the 27th to 30th week (7 - 8 months). Though it could be possible, but I think it is supposed to be highly unlikely as scientists are more certain about the former, that is could be as early as the 22nd week (5 and a half months).

So, I try to stay out of debates like this, but since I was asked I will respond.

1. Once conception occurs, you have a "whole" living creature.

2. That creature matures over time and eventually becomes independent

3. I don't believe independence is needed for rights to exist

4. I think rights occur once conception occurs

But, I believe the mother's rights are more important at that time. I also think the father's rights are more important. Here is my only dilemma...

If the father wants to abort the fetus and the mother doesn't, does the father have the ability to opt out of the responsibility for the child?

If the father wants to abort the fetus and the mother doesn't, does the father have the ability to opt out of the responsibility for the child?

I would think that is ideal. Since the mother can decide whether or not the baby is born, it is more her responsibility than the father, though if the father doesn't want her to abort it he should stay with her because the baby is still his responsibility.

Yes. If mom wants the baby and dad does not, he should have the right to give up his parental rights. I support choice for both genders. :)

Andy, how do you reconcile your views (outlined above) with the equal protections clause of our Constitution?

Never. Killing is always alright.

It has no consciousness, it cannot move which makes it pretty much not alive. It's like giving rights to dead people.

A child's rights should begin when their life begins. If they don't... then what good are any of their rights to them anyway?
