Diesels used to noisy and slow, now though they are close to petrol in both these respects and are now the same on performance, except for city driving (pick up in the low gears can be a wee bit slower), We have both, wife has petrol, I have a diesel, if you're buying one make sure it has a turbo otherwise you'll not get the same acceleration as the petrol especially when on a motorway. For mileage and fuel price the diesel is best of the two, but hybrids are best from what I've read. If you are only using the car for a run around in a city, the diesels, don't have the same responsiveness that you'll need for city driving. If you commute then the diesel will be your best bet, just don't buy a small one. 1.9+ Side: Diesel

It could be old, or just in need of repair, if it has a dual mass flywheel that's broken it can make a rattle, new Volkswagen/Audi/Skoda/Seat diesel flywheels are quiet, I'm not sure about other manufacturers, although my brother has a Toyota diesel and it's quiet too. If the car uses the old single mass flywheel technologies then they sound like a tractor when idling and give a loud rattle before the engine's warmed up. If you are thinking about buying a car always take it for a test drive, turning it on in the car sales place will tell you whether or not it's a noisy bastard or not. The video is the sound of a single mass flywheel, is this the sound of your neighbor's car? Single mass flywheel.
