I think the Brits and the Americans have different types of humour. The stereotypical humour of the Brits is extremely dry and sarcastic. The British version of The Office is all about deriving the comedy from the absolutely cringeworthy situations that David Brent gets himself into. To me, this is far funnier than what the American version has to offer, but I can understand why The Office was changed to appeal to the American sense of humour. Side: British
