Which foreign policy move is better?

Nations have a choice. They can become part of a major Military Alliance such as the SCO or North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, or they can join the Non-Alligned Movement.

The Pillars of the NAM are:

  • -Respect for fundamental human rights and for the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations.
  • -Respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations.
  • -Recognition of the movements for national independence.
  • -Recognition of the equality of all races and of the equality of all nations, large and small.
  • -Abstention from intervention or interference in the internal affairs of another country.
  • -Respect for the right of each nation to defend itself singly or collectively, in conformity with the Charter of the United Nations.
  • -Refraining from acts or threats of aggression or the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any country.
  • -Settlement of all international disputes by peaceful means, in conformity with the Charter of the United Nations.
  • -Promotion of mutual interests and co-operation.
  • -Respect for justice and international obligations.

Joining the NAM ensures that a nation will not be dragged into wars to which they are not concerned. Furthermore, joining the NAM promotes peace and security.

Being "dragged" into war can have its benifits. When I was doing my PhD in Political Science, we had a lecturer who told us that many countries in military alliances (Primarily NATO) benefit from being a 3rd party involved in conflict as those countries have very large military industrial complexes and a powerful arms trade. Being involved in war means that those countries' economies are stimulated a bit more, allowing the politicians to reap the economic benefits while avoiding a lot of oppression from the population.

Being dragged into war does not have it's benefits. War is simply slaughter, and those who benefit monetarily are probably immoral and corrupt. I'm sure that you would change your mind of you were sent to fight as a PFC.

Avoid tangling alliances, they are what set off both world wars and they were a waste of life.

Note to everyone who said "how did alliances set off both world wars?" here is the answer:

Serbian terrorists assassinated the arch-duke Austria-Hungary, Austria gave Serbia an ultimatum, Serbia did not meet all the demands so the two nations went to war. Serbia was allied with Russia, so Russia attacks Austria-Hungary and since Germany had an alliance with Austria-Hungary they told Russia to stop mobilizing their army. Russia refused, so Germany saw the writing on the wall and realized that they would have to fight Russia who had an alliance with France, since Russia was still mobilizing their army the Germans decided to attack France so that they wouldn't be caught in a two front war. The German-French border was heavily fortified so Germany asked Belgium if they could pass their army through Belgium. Belgium refused and Germany decided they would take less causalities if they went through Belgium, this was an act of war against Belgium and then the British entered the war due to their ally Belgium being attacked. WWI was caused by a web of alliances and WWII was a direct result of WWI.

NAM seems the logical and peaceful choice. To promote peace in the world is the main objective.
