I believe the OT is a succession of Allegories, metaphorical stories that are meant as life lessons, basically do not fuck with God.

The NT, is supposed to be an account of Jesus' life and teachings, although because of the errors, disagreements and omissions it needs to be taken with a pinch of salt as far as historical documentation is concerned.

Side: Metaphors

If we could agree that the Bible is largely symbolic, I think there would be less argument in general. It's when we try to tell people that it is the word-for-word undisputed word of God where we run into problems. Honestly, I don't think it's fair to God. The Bible makes him bad, oafish and rednecky.

Side: Metaphors

I think metaphors are used freely in the Bible. After all, if that wasn't the case, there would be plenty of people with just one eye from plucking out the other one.

Side: Metaphors

It just depends on what you believe in my case I believe the Bible is written by men by the inspiration of God Himself.

Then whence come the inconsistencies?

Before you can say something like that you should read EVERY word in the Bible. If you say that there are "inconsistencies" then you quite obviously have only read portions of the scriptures.
