Who has a more legitimate claim over the Falkland Islands?

I was under the impression that this had all been sorted out decades ago and that after a little conflict it have been generally agreed that the Falkland Islands will remain under British Sovereignity.

But then I see this...

http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/nilegardiner/100162100/the-obama-administration-knifes-britain-yet-again-over-the-falklands/

http://www.thecommentator.com/article/2924/obama_administration_not_neutral_on_falkland_islands

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011/06/10/obama-administration-backs-argentina-over-uk-on-falkland-dispute/

Now while these articles may have been written a few months ago and and the reliablity of the sources may be questionable, I think it strange that a country that calls itself the "land of the free" is willing to ignore the will of a population and prefer to settle the matter by haggling over land like fuedal lords.

Only 10% of those that live on the Falkland Islands can speak Spanish so it would be a struggle for them to intergrate into Argentinian society - most of them wouldn't be able to talk to an argentinian! The vaste majority are British descendants.

Plus the fact that there was a refendum held on the 11th of this month which found that 99.8% of people on the Falkland Islands wanted to stay as part of the UK.

There really is no way they can be a part of Argentina. The only argument is that it's closer to Argentina than the UK but this seems a bit silly. It's kind of like saying Alaska should be part of Canada despite the fact that people from Alaska don't identify themselves as Canadians nor want to be part of it.

The people in the Falklands want to remain British. For now, this is a good enough reason for the islands to remain a crown possession.

It's the islanders decision. Majority of them want to stay British, which means they will stay British.

Argentina have no claim whatsoever to the Islands, also the Islanders want to remain British. Argentina have only thrown this strop over the Falklands because there has been oil found there.

Apparently the Argentinians "inherited" their claim of the Falklands from the Spanish.

Land ownership is determined by strength. If you are strong enough, you take and you keep it until someone stronger comes along. Animals fight for territory and so do humans. Currently the Brits can kick Argentinian ass so those fucking islands belong to the Brits ;)

Seriously what is with Britain and wanting a worldwide empire? They should get the fuck over themselves and accept that the only land they have the right to own is their country's land.

And what defines the land of one's country? If it is just the fact that we're seperated from our extended dominions by a stretch of water then I believe that Alaska should not be part of the United States.

America shouldn't own Alaska. It's all idiotic.

Every time the Falkland iselanders have been given the choice they have chosen to remain British, they will be given that choice again shortly in the meantime they remain British. What I think is a shame is that after years of Britain supporting America in their quest to police force the world and at a great loss of British soldiers America have chosen to stab Britain in the back and not support them in this and are remaining neutral, gutless.

Don't be enslaved to a monarchy, throughout history this has proven to turn out shit.

Seriously what is with Britain and wanting a worldwide empire?

My theory is that since it is such a tiny island nation it wants to take over other countries to compensate.

"Take over"

Take over? Really? We never took over anything, we just discovered the Falklands islands. Why would you, for some reason, think that we tried to attack them?

"To compensate"

As the greatest country on the planet we have no need to compensate and nothing to compensate for
