Who is the greatest Ancient General ? And Why ?

Pick one general from ancient times who you think is the greatest and explain why such as accomplishments , strategy , etc. And by ancient I mean before firearms were invented .

I would have to go with Scipio . He was smart enough to defeat Hannibal and his army of war elephants , and at the time war elephants were like tanks , and Scipio beat them with just infantry and calvary . He is often thought to be one of the greatest generals who ever lived . Why , because he beat Hannibal . And Hannibal almost conquered the Roman empire , one of the greatest empires in history.

Nobunaga Oda. He was one of the best strategists and warlords of the sengoku era of Japan. He may have been ruthless and merciless but sometimes you have to be ruthless. He came up with one of the most brilliant strategic plans of all time during the battle of Nagashino.

Oops I didn't read what you said about before fire arms part. I still stand by my statement though.

Scipio is a good choice, but I'll have to go with Alexander the Great. How can you go against a guy whose last name is" the Great"? Just kidding. But he did conquer most of the known world! Deadliest warriors should have done a match between Scipio and Alexander. Would've been good.....

Yeah , Alexander the great is probably second on my list of ancient generals . I put him second because I feel scipio was slightly better at strategy . I mean when Alexander attacked the Persians he decided to charge at their leader and he bailed . Then the Persians said " screw it , I'm not fighting for a guy who just bailed on us " . He was still a great general regardless but that being regarded as his greatest accomplishment is kinda a let down .

I hardly know anything about history, but I think Genghis Khan was a general right?

If so, then I'd put him as the greatest general. He ransacked the lands, won over all, and fathered so many children it's said that about one out of every 200 men are directly related to him.

Primitive firearms existed in his time so although he was a great warrior you can't really count him on this debate.
