Who should I vote for in the 2008 New Mexico 2nd District House of Representatives Race?

The major issue thus far in the race for New Mexico' 2nd congressional district's seat s whether Republican candidate Ed Tinsley is indeed a resident of the 2nd. Tinsley does own a ranch in southern New Mexico, but spends most of his time in a house outside Santa Fe.

The Democratic candidate Harry Teague has blasted Tinsley about not being a true resident in the district he's running for office in, even awarding him with a fake “resident of the month” award in Santa Fe. The attention this issue is garnering negative attention to Tinsley, a situation he would rather avoid in this contested battle.

Most Congressional Candidates are using the Internet to their advantage because 71% of young adults use the internet as their source of news and information. When it showed that GOP Presidential Candidate Ron Paul was very successful in the campaign and raising $6.3 million in one day, the rest of the officials running just try to copy.

Democratic Congressional Candidate for New Mexico’s 2nd District Harry Teague is no different and has a wide variety of videos for his stances on certain issues and why he believes Edward Tinsley is the wrong choice for Congressman.

A lot of Mr. Teague’s campaign is of small-town family values and he discusses this lot in most of his stances on certain issues. Healthcare is a great example:

“At the age of 17 my father became ill. Because he did not have health insurance, I went to work in the oil fields to help provide for my family. I know what it feels like to be without healthcare when a loved one is ill. That’s why I’ll fight in Congress so that no American will ever have to face the situation I did.”

Republicans have come under fire recently in New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District due to vacating Congressman Steve Pearce's actions during the recent State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) Bill debate in the House of Representatives.

According to his primary rival, Heather Wilson, Pearce violated ethics on many occasions, most recently by sending out 130,000 automated phone calls to voice his opposition to the Bill. The phone calls allegedly urged recipients to contact him through an official, non-campaign website and phone number.

With Pearce leaving his seat to make a run for the Senate seat being vacated by Pete Domenici, mistrust of the exact nature of those Republicans who continue to represent their district resonate heavily with the electorate.

New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District Republican candidate Edward Tinsley does not support the livable wage debate. When Santa Fe passed a $10.50 minimum wage for businesses over 25 people, Tinsley was outraged saying it would hurt business for the area. Citing a research firm, Plunkett Research, and his own K-Bob's Steakhouse chain as deciding not to open businesses in the city and many already existing businesses may be in trouble.

The living wage laws throughout the country affect mostly government jobs, however, recently cities have been inclined to pass ordinances to impact every employer in a given area to keep up with inflation.

In this race there is only candidate that has created jobs, turned an economy around and known what it means to be a true public servant. We are in a tough time in America right now and what we need are workers not talkers. Tinsley may be a polished speaker, but I'll take the record over the rhetoric any day.

On values, Edward Tinsley says, "Strong families are the backbone of our society here in New Mexico and throughout America. Our families, first, and our communities, second, lay the basis for the next generation's value structure, their sense of civic duty, and personal responsibility." Tinsley has shown excellence in adhering to the very principles that made America great. He has received an "A" rating from the National Rifle Association, showing his unequivocal support for the Second Amendment. As a small business owner, he also understands that low taxes benefit families in a huge way, and he supports keeping taxes low for businesses as well as individuals and families. He believes that low corporate taxes can ensure that businesses hire more, invest more, and ultimately benefit their communities more. He supports the principles of America, and has a record and lifestyle to prove it.

For almost 3 decades, the Republican Party has controlled New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District's seat. 1980 marked the year when the right gained control and hasn't lifted its hand since. Steve Pearce currently holds the seat, but is vacating for a run for the Senate.

In his place, two candidates are vying for control, Ed Tinsley(R) and Harry Teague(D). The challenge Teague has is displacing a candidate from a party that has dominated the 2nd since its creation in 1969. Except for a brief period in the '70's, Republicans have held the seat firmly, the electorate is mostly registered Democrat but votes Republican in most elections. This November, according to tradition, Tinsley has a strong chance of retaining the seat for the GOP.

The Republican Congressional Candidate for New Mexico’s 2nd District is a fervid and avid proponent of the War in Iraq and points out specifically what he wants the United States Armed Forces and the Iraqi Government to accomplish and how this affects the national security not just of the United States for a stable Middle East Region:

• Properly funding and equipping our troops. Our troops deserve our monetary support, the very best military equipment and technology available, as well as our moral support.

• Keeping our Senior Officers in place, as they possess the institutional knowledge, situational awareness and critical expertise necessary to prevail.

• Respecting the recommendations of the top U.S. commanders in Iraq, regarding all strategic and tactical initiatives, including a timetable for future troop reductions in Iraq.

• Accelerating the training and equipping of the Iraqi armed forces and police. We must hold the Iraqi government accountable for their performance. The future of Iraq ultimately lies in the hands of the Iraqi people, the Iraqi government, and the Iraqi armed forces – their strength is an essential requirement for bringing U.S. troops home from Iraq.

• Supporting our troops and soldiers upon their return home, by immediately addressing health and mental issues, as well as the financial challenges facing them and their families.

• Supporting the families of our deployed troops.

Questions resonate around Democratic nominee for New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District, Harry Teague. Hard line Democrats have pointed out many facts that seem to point to Teague's support of the Republican Party, specifically vacating Congressman Steve Pearce.

Opponents point out that Teague gave $1,000 and $2,100 to Pearce's campaign in 2004 and 2006 respectively. Teague and Pearce also went to grade school together and apparently are longtime friends through their wives.

When Teague was elected Lea County Commissioner in 1998 he served with a commission comprised of Republicans who continued to vote him into power despite him being named a Democrat.

Also at odds with his liberal base are the sources of fundraising that Teague has been allowed. 26% of his supporters are Republicans, with 22% being Pearce donors. 51% are linked to the oil industry and almost all his money comes from Lea County, home of both Teague and Pearce.

What affect this will have on voters in November is yet to be seen, but the cries of DINO have already been sounded.

Edward Tinsley, Republican candidate for New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District, claims if elected he will represent the restaurant industry in Congress. Having worked in the restaurant industry for many years, Tinsley now operates 19 K-Bob's Steakhouses in New Mexico.

According to Tinsley, some of the challenges faces the industry are immigration reform for workers, the economy and the Employee Free Choice Act. He believes without addressing these issues, the industry, which employs millions nationwide, will be detrimentally damaged.
