because of the technology that we have and will obtain. we will be the last species on earth even if it means that we would have to go into extreme measures to survive

I like the optimism. But how the hell would we survive without food. You know... the stuff that comes from plants. Even the meat we eat has energy that is derived from plants (or other primary producers like algae). I think the last species will be some sort of photoautotroph or chemoautotroph. I'm leaning WAY more toward the chemoautotroph. They can survive in water temperatures at boiling point, but at pressures so it's still liquid water, and get energy from methane from hydrothermal vents. They don't need the sun! Isn't that awesome?

It will either be a very specific bacterium, mold, or insect.

It would probably be a species that doesn't even currently exist. Larger lifeforms (mammalian, etc) are far more prone to extinction through natural disasters, so I would even go so far as to say that I doubt very much that it would be the evolutionary desendant of humans.

well that brings us to the conundrum how will the earth end will it be through nuclear explosions, astroid strike, the sun running out of fuel, or a deseise that destroys all life, in which case if the desease spread by a bacteria the bacteria would be left, but if its a nuclear bomb only cocroaches and rats will survive the nuclear winter, and in the case of an astroid it will be whichever species is farthest from the impact zone which could be a human, but most likely it will be in a few billion years when the sun dies out and engulfs earth at which point evolution would have new species covering it and the humans would've evolved but left the planet before it gets burnt leaving the world to its desendants

There's not nearly enough nukes in the world to destroy all the people.

The only ways the earth could be left with only one species is through cosmic disasters, like in 10 billion years when the sun explodes, or a huge asteroid even bigger than the one that killed the dinasours.

If we're talking a disaster so powerful that specifically every last thing on earth but one is killed, I'd bet some one celled organism that lives on the ocean floor,

as the only thing that could kill all other life would have to crash into us from outerspace (asteroid, solar flare from a relatively close star, some unknown force we haven't discovered.)

The problem with the arguement is that, most cosmically catastrophic events, such as our own star exploding, wouldn't even leave one species.

The window between killing all life, and killing all but one life, must be a very small one, it may not even exist.

Some kind of tiny few-celled beast will survive far longer than we.

It will be us humans who will face the enlarging sun that will engulf the planets including Earth.

Humans who are more intelligent will be the last or maybe with some other species will face the sun wrath which have provided us billions of years of sunlight and warmth.

Earth will be gone and humans will be the last species

I think only insects will survive because the radiation will not affect them.
