Ignorance of history, and insanely poor judgment are the only possible explanations. The Maurya Empire, the various Persian Empires, Alexander, the Mughal Empire, the Rashidun Caliphate, the Mongol hordes, the British Empire, and the Soviet Union all invaded, and any "successful" conquest was difficult, expensive, and short lived. Afghanistan has always been a land of very hard people. Kipling even includes this in his poem/song. "The Young British Soldier" When you're wounded and left on Afghanistan's plains, And the women come out to cut up what remains, Jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains An' go to your Gawd like a soldier. There is no technology to make a people as durable and intractable as the people of Afghanistan. History shows clearly how millennia of living in a harsh landscape that is in the path of every continental invasion has hardened the Afghan people beyond the conquest of people softened by generations of prosperity, comfort, and easy living in an industrialized society with a welfare state. It is a clear indication of how abysmal is the quality of a Yale education that G W Bush thought the US could ever actually win in Afghanistan. Side: OBL
