Why I am against drugs/alcohol and cigerettes
If you look at my profile, it says that I am a libertarian.
How come a libertarian is against drugs and alcohol and other dangerous stuff?
I live in a country, where taxes are extremely high. This month for example. I am a 17 year old student, and still 30% of my payment goes to pay taxes. 30% will not sound very much to many of you. But like I said, I am a student - I can only work at night, and I have to buy expensive books.
In average, I get 700 bucks a month. 30% of that is about 230. Which means I get to keep less than 500 bucks.
With these I have to buy my really expensive books in school.
So now I wonder, those 230 bucks that are missing in my payment, where do they go ?
They go to 'help' drugaholics and alcoholics pay their own bills. I have already trouble with paying mine. But because of some pimp, who's to high to get a job, I HAVE TO PAY HIS or HERS RENT AND FOOD.
Because someone is to drunk to pay for gas and electrisity, I .. I with my lazy ass payment, have to pay it for him/her.
Because of some smoker, who've been smoking for 50 years and then got lung cancer, can't pay his lung transplant. I have to pay it for him/her
Every month, the government take 30% of my payment, to support these lazy cows, who can't figure out, that DRUGS AND ALCOHOL ARE ACTUALLY REALLY BAD FOR YOU. It makes some of you addicted, therefore unable to have a job - ergo I have to pay your stupid bills.
You call it freedom, I call it stupidity.
A big percentage of those who are addicted to all kinds of drugs, start when they're really young. That is why I think there should be an age limit.
So that's why I am against drugs and stuff, so now to why I am a libertarian.
Like I already said like a thousand times, I live in a country where the taxes are very .. extremely high. 30% for me, 60% for my dad.. 70% is the highest I think.
I am a libertarian, because I think this is stupid. It is stupid that I have to pay other bills, because someone can't get a job for some reason.
It is stupid that I can't decide for myself, where my money goes to.
Thanks for taking your time reading this, I wrote this because many people mention this particular thing when I dispute what people call 'freedom'.

So as a libertarian wouldn't it be more prudent to want to eliminate government support for druggies, not try to eliminate drugs? If what you're against is having to pay to support someone elses drug habit (a very understandable position to hold) why not be against the tax and the welfare system, and not the drugs themselves? Libertarians are all about small government (minimizing/eliminating government support for druggies) and personal freedom (the ability to do drugs if you so choose). It seems you could get what you want within the bounds of this kind of libertarianism, so why be against drugs in general? 1

You probably need to adjust the way you have filled out your W-2s. At your current income and adding educational tax credits, you should be approaching zero tax liability. That means you should be getting most or all of the back in the way of tax return when you file. At your age, you probably haven't filed that often before (so just a heads up on what to expect). When I was a college student and working, I always went ahead and claimed No Federal Income Tax Withholding. You can actually tell your employer not to withhold anything. The danger of doing that for most foks is that if you are in a higher bracket, you will end up getting killed with a tax bill come tax time. But you you're a college student, making less than 10,000 per year. You DEFINITELY need to adjust your W-2s. See a tax professional if you need some help or further clarificaiton. 1

Well, this is just another insident of how americans think they're the only people living on earth, and how their politics rule the world. I hate to break this to you, but I don't live in the states. In my country the taxes are 30% for me, higher for some, lower for some - depends on how much you earn. If you did look at my profile, which says I am danish (i think), then you're not so bad after all. I am not danish, my country does not exist in the country list in CD.. so I just had to pick Denmark. Our tax system is not the same as in Denmark. 1

Someone doesn't understand taxes, economics, or anyone else's feelings. Even if your dipshit Daily Mail reader-esque rhetoric was true, how would banning cigarettes and alcohol help? If you are really too fucking selfish to help other humans, wouldn't you just abolish free help for people instead of banning intoxicating substances? 1

I have no problem in helping other people. What I don't like is to be FORCED to help people. Because the government litteraly takes the money without asking me. Also, I want to help people. I want to help old people that need chairs and meds and whatever, and I also want to help poor people that don't have a house or food. I have nothing against helping retarded people who need special equipment to make their daily life easier. What do you mean about I don't understand taxes? I know exactly how much I pay to the government every month. What I really don't like, is to help people, who put themselves in the crap they're in. Most people (I am aware, that old people who're like .. 90 they didn't know the consequenses about cigarrettes and stuff ) most people who smoke, know before they do, that this can harm your body. So why should I help them? They put themselves in the crap, I don't want to have anything to do with it. They can pay the consequence that they were risking. And what do you mean I don't understand taxes? I know exactly what I pay to the government each month. 1

Lolwut? You believe your taxes are used inappropriately. Completely fair, I agree with you. But your answer to this isn't to say "cut support for druggies" (which is the standard libertarian response). It's to regulate drugs more heavily. Now, instead of your taxes going on rehabilitating druggies, it's going to be used to imprison them. Which will cost more. Which will mean you'll have to pay more taxes. Which means you'll start complaining about taxes again. 1

Alright two things: 1. Being a pimp is a job 2. People abusing these systems and going on to food stamps or wellfare is not from the substances its from these people just being lazy in general. If you took these things away not only would you not have to support these people, most of them might think "hey, If I'm wasted all day and high all night, I won't have any money" and actually work and not leech of the system. I smoke weed, eat shrooms and sometimes drop acid and I'm not some wellfare leech. So what I'm trying to say is, when they say "give me free stuff" instead of blaming the substances and taking everyone's drugs away, you just say "no, I won't give you free stuff just because your lazy" and then the problem is solved. |
