Why are Republicans obsessed with homosexuality?

Can Republicans stop thinking of gay sex

They're obsessed about homosexuality because it plays well with their voters. The voters want to see evidence that the republicans are supporting christianity, and because it's hard to do things directly supporting it without violating church/state separation, they have to do public things like bash homosexuals.

That it plays well with the voters is a big part of it, as far as this foreigner can see. There's always a lot of pressure on politicians to represent their target audience, and that's all too often xenophobic, over-Christian and extra-macho manliness in the Republican demographic. It's not so much an obsession as them feeling the need to be emphatically against it.

Republicans are currently the party of American Tradition. The American Tradition is believing that marriage is an institution between a man and a woman.

It's not that they hate gays or are religious nuts (like the common stereotypes) because if they actually hated gays, they would take away rights from gays. so far as i've seen, they just haven't added special privaleges (such as same sex marriage). it's not illegal for a gay to get married to someone of the opposite sex, and gays can get civil unions which provide the same benefits as a married couple. it's just not a religious stamp as "married". and if you legalize same sex marriage, straight people will do it too (for many reasons, but mainly to receive benefits).

now, i'm against the government having any authority at all over marriages. i think that if couples want benefits, they are required to get civil unions, same sex or not. marriage should be left to the churches and religions that do it for their "together under god" shit. this way, both gays and religious people are happy.

Actually, they do hate gays. Sorry. They have made every attempt to take away as many rights from lgbt people as they possibly can. The Bush administration has pulled every stunt they can think of to pull the rug out from lgbt federal employees as they can.

Have you actually thought about what you've said, or did you just shoot from the hip? "It's not illegal for a gay to get married to someone of the opposite sex and gays can get civil unions which provide the same benefits as a married couple."

Tell you what. I'll force you to get married to someone of the same sex, and you tell me if that's "a right" or not. What part of "gay" don't you get? I am no more attracted to a woman than a straight man would be to another man. Get it? O-R-I-E-N-T-A-T-I-O-N. Real simple. Happens in some 1600 different species, too. Get over it.

Where exactly are these vaunted civil unions? Vermont, New Hampshire, a couple of other states, that's it. Not the other 45 or so. Doesn't exist. Stop kidding yourself that the great "right" exists. It doesn't for the vast majority of the country.

Civil unions, when they exist at all, are not recognized by the federal government: so it is NOT "the same benefits as a married couple."

Look, my Episcopal church would do same sex marriages in a heartbeat. That's not the point. Ever heard of DOMA - defense of marriage act? It's a federal law and a state law in almost every state. Can't get married. Against the law.

Have you ever looked at how these stupid constitutional amendments work you people keep adding to state constitutions? In Arizona, for example, it takes one vote more than a majority to put the amendment into the law. It takes a 2/3 margin to get rid of it. That's not exactly a democracy now, is it? You pull this idiocy now, and it will take decades to undo the damage. Public sentiment is rapidly changing, and ultimately, views like yours will be the distinct minority. It's getting very close now.

People that want these amendments now - right this very second - are counting on burning their hatred and division into the law while they still have a chance, and making it as difficult as possible to undo the damage later.

Finally: "Republicans are currently the party of American Tradition." Really? Invading an innocent country like Iraq and lying to the Congress and the American people is an American Tradition? Confiscating data on your laptop at an airport is an American Tradition? Taking away hard won constitutional rights is an American Tradition? Torture, wreckless spending? Is that another "tradition."

What the hell planet are you people living on?

Thank God this country is about to remove Republicans from party on just about every level from the presidency to the local county dogcatcher. We've had quite enough of your "values" and your "tradition."

yep, a party of american traditions... what part of that don't you get?

it's american tradition that during a time of WAR, the government does whatever it takes to keep people like YOU alive. want proof?

Civil War

WW1

WW2

Korean War

Vietnam War

Gulf War

Cold War

Today's War

Look at those wars and tell me the government stayed completely in bounds. bull shit.

now, to the gay marriage thing. No one's being FORCED to marry anyone... so your analogy is as retarded as the thought that gay marriage is a right. it isn't a right, it's made up. Marriage is something between a man and a woman... if a gay wants those fuckin' benefits so badly, all they need to do is marry someone of the opposite sex. it's not like the government is saying "nope, you can't even do that".

now, me? i'm actually against the government having anything to do with marriage, but it's EXXXXXXXTREEEEEEEEEMELY retarded to suggest that Republicans keep up the same tradition of marriage just cause they hate gays.

Romans (who were completely fine with gays, no "homophobia" [a retarded term used today] was apparent) and they gave marital benefits to opposite couples because they wanted to encourage reproduction... gonna claim the Romans hated gays?

And who's values and traditions? mine? i have none... so i don't even know what that last sentence was about. i'm not republican or "conservative", but it truly pisses me off when people decide to character assassinate instead of actually discussing the issue.

and yeah, the Log Cabin Republicans hate gays soooo much.

a bunch of random down votes. for this reason:

has no actual argument to prove that republicans are bad, so they just down vote those who say that Republicans aren't as bad as everyone tries to portray them.

pathetic moron.

Many Republicans just don't want others to be happy. Their schadenfreude takes over and they think of themselves as being superior. A Republican supporting Gay Marriage is an anomaly. Gay Marriage doesn't harm anyone, yet, many Republicans treat it as if the Blob was invading your town.

A Republican supporting Gay Marriage is an anomaly.

It's not as abnormal as you would think spending time on the internet, especially among younger voters. 61% of Republican voters aged 18-29 support same-sex marriage.

27% of Republican voters over 50 also support same-sex marriage. Yes, a smaller, number, but almost 3 out of 10 is not an anomaly.

There was a fascinating study that separated homophobic from non-homophobic male participants via a standardized psychological test. The participants were later shown videos of straight porn, and gay porn.

Among the non-homophobic men, something like 20% were physically aroused, as determined by instrumentation measuring blood flow to the penis. However, about 70% of the homophobic men were physically aroused.

It's terribly sad, but heavily closeted gay men in the Republican party, afraid of being outed, try to conceal themselves by being strident anti-gay activists.

Look at the Congressman from Jerry Falwell's district in Virginia four years ago, the mayor of Spokane, Washington, Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho, etc., etc.

It doesn't seem to be much of a problem in the Democratic party because there isn't such a stigma about it. Witness Barney Frank and Tammy Baldwin. Here in Tucson, we've got several gay democratic politicians, and even a gay republican former congressman, Jim Kobe. I understand that he felt a great sense of relief when he was finally outed, and I know he was very active in the lgbt and HIV/AIDS charities here after that.

Very, very sad that more of them aren't like that, both for their own sake, and for the gay and lesbian community.

They fear that they will be preceived as weak for having "emotions". The only emotion Republicans have is love for stupid people. Look at Palin. One of the most unqualified people on earth to lead a country and they swoon over her like she is the secound coming of Christ.

I saw the mentioned documentary about the homophobes being more aroused by gay porn than straight porn. I must say it is so true. Republicans try to play tought. but, they are really a bunch of scared little babies. But. the other side has is also right. They pander to the fear of America. That allowing gays in the Military will destroy our strentgh. But, What most people do not realize is that the military has gays members already. What a concept people. If Rush would just come out of the closet.

The more homophobic you are the more likely you are to be gay......................

There are some Republicans who are closet cases and they will oppose Gay Rights but will later be embarrassed when they get caught in a homosexual liaison.
