As individuals we can help a little by trying to avoid buying foodstuffs and products that are packed in plastic materials. ''We could help by being more discerning in our buying habits '' but WE DON'T and probably NEVER WILL. This is why it is essential that governments step in with a BIG STICK instead of a measly carrot and rough-up manufacturers and farm produce providers and MAKE THEM *toe-the-environment-friendly-line. FULL MARKS to BOOTS, the U.K's largest pharmaceutical and cosmetics chain who have adopted a policy of paper only packaging bags. We need more responsible retailers such as Boots while we wait for the unlikely emergence of politicians of integrity and substance. Side: The industry creates jobs.
Plastic is a biproduct of the oil industry, which is fuel or energy sectors, it is waste already, we merely find uses for it rather than dump it. One of those is packaging, it's fairly versatile, easy to create an airtight seal or shape it to any size. It's certainly cheap, given we would dump it otherwise, some oil giants would probably consider paying companies to take it away, it's just trash to them. Side: The industry creates jobs.

If we need an illustration of how the public have been reared to become filthy litter louts who don't care anything for the environment in which they live and share with earth's other species take a look at the high volumes of disposed rubbish strewn everywhere after a public event. Modern generations have been bred by pigs to be thoughtless pigs and not to consider the quality of their own habitat never mind the natural world. THIS IS WHY GOVERNMENTS MUST ACT DECISIVELY TO BAN ALL BUT THE ABSOLUTE ESSENTIAL USE OF PLASTIC. YES, AS THE GENERAL PUBLIC ARE AS HAPPY AS PIGS IN SHIT WALLOWING IN THEIR SELF-GENERATED FILTH, GOVERNMENTS WILL BE RELUCTANT TO EXTRACT THEM FROM THE SEWERS BUT ACTION AND LEADERSHIP IS REQUIRED URGENTLY BY THOSE WITH THE POLITICAL COURAGE. Side: Bribary & corruption.
Why do governments worldwide fail to act on the PLASTIC MENACE Hello A: It's simple really.. Plastic is a hydrocarbon produced from fossil fuel. So, as long as the oil producers have a stranglehold on right wing politicians, we WILL produce plastic. excon Side: Bribary & corruption.
That was the point I was trying to make, or at least suggest. The plastic production divisions of the various petrochemical corporations could be restricted and banned from producing or supplying the raw materials to all manufacturers of non-essential plastic products. In addition to this all NON-ESSENTIAL plastic materials should be banned from being imported or markered. This is the case in other industries such as the automobile industry where the production of internal combustion engines, both gas and diesel, will be banned in Europe from 2030 onwards. This is despite, as Carlos Tavares ( the CEO of Peugeot, Citroen, Opel and Vauxhall ) explains;- the European governments currently raking in 448 billion Euros per annum from fuel tax. A ban on the installation of gas boilers in new built properties will come into effect in the U.K., as soon as 2025. ''WHERE THERE IS A WILL THERE IS A WAY''. Such an important issue transcends political ideologies and should be regarded as common ground upon which the vying political parties can agree to tackle on a united front basis. Most of us will not have known a world without carbon based fuels, but many of us will remember a world when most packaging materials and everyday products were made from biodegradable elements such as paper, glass, metals etc. Even small components come encased in enormous BUBBLE-PACKS many of which require considerable effort to extract the contents from the reinforced plastic packaging. Remember when pretty much everything was wrapped in paper bags, tin or glass? Even toothpaste was sold in soft metal tubs or tubes. Confectionary was stored and displayed in glass jars and dispensed into paper bags after being weighed. In the meantime marine life such as turtles, dolphins and seals will continue to be choked or poisoned to death, curtesy of SLOVENLY, THOUGHTLESS, SELF-SERVING MANKIND.
