Why do people love to make generalizations?

Not all cops are corrupt, not all Christians are good nor bad, just as not every atheist is moral or amoral. I feel it just makes more sense to judge a person by their own actions than by the actions of the group they just happen to belong to.

Because it makes life less complicated

So do you believe it's fair to incorrectly, judge someone calling them something a kin to a molester because of the group they are apart of?

Its just a normal act of exaggeration made to make the view on life simpler. Though unpleasant to the ears, I can understand why it happens

Generally speaking, most people like to make generalizations because in general a generalization is good enough ;)

I guess I made this out of frustration at the number of debates that do just this, however I'd still like an answer as best you could.

Because, people are illogical. ;)

Simply because often is very difficult to explain very complex phenomenon to an illiterate simpleton.

It's more simple to assume you won't get along with those types of people, rather than taking the time to get to know every individual. Of course, this isn't always efficient either. Just because two people are Christians doesn't mean they'll get along, the chances are better because they'll share the same beliefs, but it could still end up as a waste of your time. People are obsessed with not wasting time, making generalizations helps cut down the time of getting to know someone.
