Why do people not want die?

I am serious.

Do humans naturally want to live?

Is there meaning behind wanting to live?

What makes a human want to live, other than fear of dying?

Why do humans fear dying? At least, most humans admit fear of dying, or fear of anything. The rest are in denial.

So, what is the point to want to live?

This means there is meaning to life because humans naturally, desire to live. At least the majority of humans in their right mind desires to live.

So, what say you?

I meant to write, "Why do people not want to die"

What is so precious about your life?

1 point

People strive to survive as a biological imperative.

Those that didn't strive to survive die before reproducing.

People don't want to die because change and the unknown are scary.

1 point

I agree.

And so, doesn't this qualify for meaning? Doesn't this mean humans strive for meaning to their lives?

Is your question; does "People strive to survive as a biological imperative." mean that human's strive for meaning to their lives?

Supposing this is your question.

People strive to survive as a biological imperative.

The imperative for a species to survive is procreation.

People strive for the imperative meaning of their lives, to have children.

So; I can't attest to people inherently wanting to live beyond the biological desire to procreate.

That being said:

There is a significant difference between the mental capabilities of animals and man.

Humans live much longer past their optimal reproducing age compared to animals in nature.

I do not know if humans living long past the end of the optimal time of their biological imperative is a factor of man having a different strive for meaning than animals; or if it is simply a affect of man's mental capabilities allowing him to combat natural causes of death that would reduce the distance from reproductive prime and average life span.

Let me know if you would like me to clarify my closing idea.

Do humans naturally want to live?

Yes.

Is there meaning behind wanting to live?

To survive. To reproduce maybe? I am sure it changes per person.

What makes a human want to live, other than fear of dying?

Because you enjoy what you are doing. Maybe you are a gamer, poker player, doctor, etc. You may love your job or what you are currently doing. Again it varies.

Why do humans fear dying?

I dont think we fear dying but the unknown that happens when we can no longer see. We fear what lays beyond that. We fear the mystery. We may fear the thought of it as well.

At least, most humans admit fear of dying, or fear of anything. The rest are in denial. So, what is the point to want to live?

Well I think you have to give life its meaning.

This means there is meaning to life because humans naturally, desire to live. At least the majority of humans in their right mind desires to live. So, what say you?

I havent found a specific meaning yet but I am sure everybody will find out one day.

Great responses. I agree.

I suppose I am emphasizing that that there is meaning to life (and fear of death/ fear of the "unknown") and it depends on the person to understand this; this is most definitely inevitable.

Thank you. I am sure many would agree.

God created me for a reason. I live for Jesus. :)

Why do you live for Jesus?

What do you live for?

I live for Jesus because He died for me and rose from the dead to concour sin. :)

I find death fascinating, and in a non suicidal way, I really want to see what happens when we die

1 point

but then again, if death is the loss of physical sensations, and the afterlife is just like a big blackout, or if its really magical and when we come back incarnated (not like jesus) its going to be forgotten, what if when we die we cant remember our physical life? and we go through death wondering if we had ever live before? but then we would have had to have lived in order to be dead, but would we remember it? what if we could remember before our birth?

That would be quite something

I think total blackout would be the most pleasureable thing possible, that's assuming it's even possible to talk about awareness in such a condition.

1 point

Because of the ego, and the fear we have of losing our ego.

Whoops, the other reply didn't post at first.

Can you elaborate a bit?

Are you claiming the human ego is what people have fear of departing from?

Nebeling(1117) Clarified

Of course. I think I said it backwards. I meant to say that our ego makes us afraid of dying.

The purpose of life is to make you wish you were dead. By the time you get old, you're ready to go. ;)

I don't wish I was dead. If I were like 85 and couldn't see anymore, couldn't do anything on my own I probably would want it then. But, I think I know what you mean, Joe. lol

It's a slow process but life works on you; day in and day out, until it wears you down.

When I was young I used to pray thus:

Now I lay me down to sleep

I pray to God my soul to keep

Should I die before I wake

I'll yell to God mistake, mistake.

Now, that I'm older I pray thus:

God take me..., take me now!!! ;)

Part of it's biological, another part is simply the fear of the unknown. Though some people, theists, will disagree with this, we really aren't SURE what happens after we die. Personally, that scares the shit out of me.

1 point

I'm a believer and I too have fear of death, it's that biological part mostly; that I want to live and not die. Even though I may believe that this life is the beginning to something else (I've got theories other than the standard "heaven" aspects), I am mostly afraid to die because every individual has to do it alone; and that's scary shit as well.

1 point

I have asked this many times but the majority of people are too small minded to contemplate such things. I often wonder why plants and cells feel the need to live, though they have no collective consciousness. My guess is, someone got lucky. They created a chemical reaction that feeds it's self, this reaction grew and took up the form of life. Or you never know, we may all be brainwashed by aliens! But why we want to live, what the feeling " happiness" actually means, and why humans along with other animals, strive to achieve it, is still a mystery to me.

1 point

Yeah, there are many ways to go about answering this question. And many people have asked this question over and over and over; it's one of those questions that is inevitably asked by humans since we are mortals. Many people don't like thinking about it because they don't know how to even begin answering it for themselves and others that don't mind it that do have an "open-mind" about it, refuse to discuss it because they'd rather think about X, Y, Z. Which is normal.

I find myself re-asking myself, and others, this question from time to time.

Really, it's an emphasis on what is important to the person asking the question; the "meaning" behind the surface.

I would say, we are living, ane because we are living we realise this, and because we realise this, we want to know more. And in order to do so, we must live, and experience things first hand. Why we have curiosity is because it is also another aspect of life.

^Basically I could go on writing crap like this forever, but we would never get anywhere meaningful.

Main point, people enjoy life, thus we want to live. Our brain interprets signals as good things, and good things are, well, good so we like these good things. Why we like/dislike things again I don't know. I am sure we will find out soon enough.

1 point

I have no guarantee that there is anything after this. Once I die it is all over, so I want to hold on to that as long as I can.

1 point

Would you rather there be something or nothing, after life?

What connection do you have to either way?

1 point

If what comes after is really nice, I want there to be something. If it is not so nice, I want there to be nothing after. Sorry I can't give a good answer.

What connection do you have to either way?

I have no idea what you are asking here.

1 point

People fear death because they're afraid of what comes next. You can be the most religious person on Earth but you still don't truly know if there is an afterlife. Knowing this life may be all we have is what makes it so precious.
