Why do we as humans enjoy arguing so much?

Sometimes arguments are necessary to resolve issues. However, a large percentage of our arguments are trivial. A shockingly large number of us enjoy arguing simply for fun; all the people here, for instance. Why is that so? Is it our need to prove our "superiority" without actually fighting? Or is it just boredom that leads us to argue so much?

If more people thought like me, then there would be less reason to argue ;)

This is true, but then it'd be true in most cases. If more people though like me, there also would be less reason to argue; arguments happen due to differences in peoples' thoughts so if everyone thought like you then there would be fewer arguments simply because of their similarities. Hell, if everyone thought like Hitler there would be fewer arguments, it just wouldn't necessarily make for a better world.

Arguing a point can lead to researching it, which can only be good. Sometimes you will find that you are wrong and sometimes you are right, if done in the format of debate everyone can have their say it is an effective tool for learning humility, logic, respect for the views of others as well as support from people that have similar views.

On the other hand some people are just belligerent and need to argue.

I don't like it when people resort to arguing. It must have something to do with human nature.

Humans don't enjoy arguing nearly enough!
