Why does the human race have such a strong 'death wish' instinct?

The two incidences of the Wuhan laboratory developed covid-19 and the man-made catastrophic  results of global warming have been 'pooh-poohed' by millions as being nothing more than enormous international conspiracies.
The stark realities of both these death causing examples of man's stupidity and unique ability to go into denial have come home to roost.
We are NOW paying the price.

As deadly and devastating fires destroy 1000s of square miles of the world there are still those lunatics who persist in claiming that there is no such thing as climate change and that covid-19 shouldn't be taken seriously.

Great swaths of Greece, Turkey, Russia and California are ablaze as a result of MAN-MADE climate change.

Climatology scientists have been issuing regular warnings about the man-made condition of climate change for well over 30 years but of course our self-destructive urge enabled mankind to ignore the stark facts and continue to jet all over the world, discharge millions of tons of Co2 gases into the atmosphere, poison the oceans and contaminate the land.

On top of this we develop deadly germ and virus based killer diseases then through unprofessional slovenliness release them into the world.

Does mankind deserve to be allowed to share this beautiful planet with other species?

whatever beauty there may be in existence on this planet, there is also a plethora of violence which is not limited to members of the human species.

whether humans 'deserve' to exist is moot. we do and we will until we do not.

humans are nothing more than animals, limited by our genetics which have not been naturally selected for to adequately prevent or address scenarios like the ones we have gotten ourselves into.

the issue is not that humans have a weak survival instinct, but that this instinct is honed primarily to address more immediate threats and circumstances. long-term vision and complex social problem solving simply have not been selected for, relative the attributes that cut against them (e.g. short-term payoffs, in/out group conflict, various cognitive biases, etc.).

the crises will continue to unfold and the suffering will continue, as it always has. the survivors will endure and adapt to the changing climate, or the species will go extinct. same as always, really. existence has always been violent and terrible; there's no reason that humans should be exempt from that, and feeling otherwise is denying reality.

Unprecedented floods have caused numerous deaths and widespread destruction in Germany, Belgium and France.

Climate change induced fires rage through Australia yet the Aussies continue to mine coal in greater volumes than ever before and have stated that they have no intention of replacing carbon based energy with renewables.

What do you think it will take to jolt mankind into the world of reality and make him recognise that we are on borrowed time.

The IRREVERSIBLE rising of ocean levels is well under way and will contiue to do so for 1000s of years to come.

nothing is likely to 'jolt' the human species into grasping our reality, in this respect or most others.
