CreateDebate is a social debate community built around ideas, discussion and democracy.
If this is your first time checking out a debate, here are some quick tips to help get you started:
Arguments with the highest score are displayed first.
Argument replies (both in favor and in opposition) are displayed below the original argument.
To follow along, you may find it helpful to show and hide the replies displayed below each argument.
To vote for an argument, use these icons:
You have the power to cast exactly one vote (either up or down) for each argument.
Once you vote, the icon will become grayed out and the argument's score will change.
Yes, you can change your vote.
Debate scores, side scores and tag scores are automatically calculated by an algorithm that primarily takes argument scores into account.
All scores are updated in real-time.
To learn more about the CreateDebate scoring system, check out the FAQ.
When you are ready to voice your opinion, use the Add Argument button to create an argument.
If you would like to address an existing argument, use the Support and Dispute link within that argument to create a new reply.
I know... But I want more INTELLIGENT users, to make the GOOD debates more interesting.
I mean, I'm all for being stupid and goofing around every once in awhile (okay maybe a little bit more than that ;)) but EVERY single debate a person makes that's just an opinion that you can't really argue is too much...
I think the real way to get more intelligent debaters is to ask current users to reach out to others (refer a friend program)...not that I have anything tangible to offer them...but I think a membership drive would be a good thing.
Also, I was thinking about reaching out to some institutions like for instance the Vatican and ask them to participate....might be a real draw for new users?
Yes, that sounds like a good idea. The question is how to get the participation though? I've posted a link to the site on other websites I've used, and I've suggested my friends check it out. I'm not sure about the people on the other sites, but I know one of my friends who comes on every once in awhile.
That's little stuff though.
And just telling someone about it may not be enough.
I am with you...you can invite people via email, but that is putting the burden on all of the users. I will have to think about this some more. Maybe we can get you and Joe to do something crazy (not that crazy) that goes viral and gets lots of advertising. Maybe an appearance on the Today Show or Good Morning America...or maybe Fox and friends? I know there are big (productive/intelligent) numbers out there with the right publicity.
I feel like moderators could move a lot of these debates to a "not important" section, that way looking through the "new debates" section wouldn't be such a rage-fest.
Yes, new debaters are often the source of these crazy debates. I have been thinking about a way to categorize the more frivolous debates and put them in a different section. Only problem is, if we do that, those debates will likely get very little activity (I know this is what you all want), but then new people who come to the site will get very discouraged and want to leave. I don't want that.
BTW, I am really the only moderator (for good or bad) right now. I mainly spend my time cleaning up the spam that has been on lately as well as the repeat argument spammers and gratuitous profanity spammers.
I think with more members you'll need more help. AKA more moderators.
As for the debates that we're talking about, maybe instead of putting away the frivolous debates, put away the more serious ones. That way the only people who will be active in them is someone who bothered to look beyond the homepage, meaning they'll be more serious about it.
yes, interesting idea. I do beleive I will need to reach out to the community to be moderators as well. But, they would have to be very established users who are somewhat stable emotionally :).
Yes, I would agree. But, there are many well established people on the site who are not ready to "play God". That is the real difficulty with moderation. Everyone feels their postion is correct (this should be deleted, or that should be spared from deletion) which is a very difficult thing I deal with. The balance is difficult, because if someone bothered to report a post, in most cases they really feel the post was offensive, off topic, repeat spam or other types of abuse. But, sometimes it really isn't that way. It will be difficult to "choose" who to give that power to. Some easier than others of course.
Yeah, I can understand how that would be difficult... For example, if Srom were a moderator he would delete EVERY argument with a little cuss word in it it, because it's his view that tit's wrong.
But you know who would be the most dangerous person to give that power? Joe. lol I feel like chaos would reign over CD in that case X) But I giggle thinking about it.
I would trust about two people to do it, in my view. Because I've never seen them lose their head, and though they disagree, they don't actually get on anyone's bad side.
I don't know why really, I haven't found any debates that I am interested on so I just check the new debates and some of them I don't even want to click or add an agrument.
I knowww haha . But if you think about it , me and my friend are trying to beat eacho other ....so were blowing up random debates lol . And making ones
I have intelligent debates all the time thing is I always send the ones disagreeing running with what Debate dignity I leave them with, after I demolish them with basic logic and research.
hhahahahahahahah hey....I get serious lol well only when I feel the need to win yet another argument. Or simply when basic logic needs to thrash someones un-thought out statements.
Because I've been absent from this site for so long, clearly :P
Seriously though, in my time away (I apologize for that, by the way, I was fired and was looking for a new job to pay my university tuition, so I've been immensely busy) I have been telling a number of my friends to join up. Most of them are quite similar to me in the way we argue, but our opinions differ on a great deal of things. Hopefully they'll join up and compensate for the amount of stupidity assaulting the site lately.
