Why should I be a Christian?

Give me your best reasons. I'm starting to feel very doubtful.

Why should i be blood or crip, black or white, why be anything, why not just be youself, a gang is a cult ,a cult is a gang, a church is both, a human is none, be a good person bro, that is All that matters, if there is a god , he,she or it would understand if it is a logical being.

I grew up Christian. Most of my family is Christian but around the time I started high school I started questioning it more. So once I entered college, I took World Religion as my humanities course and that really kind of sealed the deal for me. Christianity was one of the last topics we covered and by then I realized that it sounded just as ridiculous as all of the other religions we studied. There is plenty of historical evidence that contradicts a lot of what the Bible says and it even contradicts itself multiple times.

I still believe in the possibility of a God, but I don't consider myself a Christian anymore.

When things seem out of your control you can always look up (and if the faith is real) know or believe that someone is watching you, with your best interest at heart.

So that you know or believe that when you die, the fate that awaits the human body wont await your soul.

Yet, and although you didn't ask for it, I think a little peace of mind is better for you than religion, but if you really want to hold on to one, Buddhism is a great way to go. It's not about worship, it's not filled heavy with rules, and really just peaceful.

1 point

Beats me?

1 point

Is that a question?

1 point

No, it means I dunno? Because I don't know why anyone would want to follow a religion that is so obviously fake.

Why are you feeling doubtful?

She doesn't know as much as you give her credit for.

1 point

Yes he should because she will have words to say about why he should be a Christian.

I can't. She must have blocked me or something.

You're a Calvinist, I believe. that means that you will appreciate the following verses: Psalm 107, Matthew 5:3-11, Romans 8:28-30, and Ephesians 1 and 2. God works all things according the counsel of His will for the good of those who love Him, whom He has chosen to be His elect since before the foundation of the world to go and bear good fruit for the good of the kingdom of Christ, which is filled with those who have been brought low in order to be brought up by the love of Christ, which assures His elect of their salvation.

However, one verse that always gives me hope is Romans 8:12-19, which states the following:

"So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. / For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God."

We are Son's of God, literally. With this family we cry to our Lord and God in agonizing pain, which is the type of cry that is spoken of in this passage. This passage then leads into saying that God does everything for the good of His elect, His sons and daughters that have been paid for by the ransom of Christ. Praise be to God!

Thank you, that was mildly reassuring.

I'd put your confidence in less insane people, personally.

Here's my favorite verse:

Deuteronomy 25:11-12

If two men are fighting and the wife of one of them comes to rescue her husband from his assailant, and she reaches out and seizes him by his private parts, you shall cut off her hand. Show her no pity.

There isn't any obvious reason why you should be a Christian. Christianity is nothing but an institutionalized philosophy - there's nothing more to it. You can take part of it because of the community surrounding Christianity, and you can take part of it because you agree with the views held by Christians.

You could say that you should join Christianity because it's The Truth, but then again, who's to decide that? You have to make up your own mind. You have decide whether you accept arguments in favour of Christianity... in the end, all you got to do is to be true to what you feel. I can't tell you why you should be a Christian, you know what Christianity is, so I won't bother telling you. Believe what you believe, I don't care. Just be true to yourself.

This was probably the best response so far. I plan on doing some serious research and contemplating to see where I ultimately stand.

I'm at the age where as I start to become an adult, I really need to differentiate between my parent's beliefs and my own true beliefs. Thanks for the input though, I appreciate it.

Psalm 136:

1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,

for his steadfast love endures forever.

2 Give thanks to the God of gods,

for his steadfast love endures forever.

3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords,

for his steadfast love endures forever;

4 to him who alone does great wonders,

for his steadfast love endures forever;

5 to him who by understanding made the heavens,

for his steadfast love endures forever;

6 to him who spread out the earth above the waters,

for his steadfast love endures forever;

7 to him who made the great lights,

for his steadfast love endures forever;

8 the sun to rule over the day,

for his steadfast love endures forever;

9 the moon and stars to rule over the night,

for his steadfast love endures forever;

10 to him who struck down the firstborn of Egypt,

for his steadfast love endures forever;

11 and brought Israel out from among them,

for his steadfast love endures forever;

12 with a strong hand and an outstretched arm,

for his steadfast love endures forever;

13 to him who divided the Red Sea in two,

for his steadfast love endures forever;

14 and made Israel pass through the midst of it,

for his steadfast love endures forever;

15 but overthrew[a] Pharaoh and his host in the Red Sea,

for his steadfast love endures forever;

16 to him who led his people through the wilderness,

for his steadfast love endures forever;

17 to him who struck down great kings,

for his steadfast love endures forever;

18 and killed mighty kings,

for his steadfast love endures forever;

19 Sihon, king of the Amorites,

for his steadfast love endures forever;

20 and Og, king of Bashan,

for his steadfast love endures forever;

21 and gave their land as a heritage,

for his steadfast love endures forever;

22 a heritage to Israel his servant,

for his steadfast love endures forever.

23 It is he who remembered us in our low estate,

for his steadfast love endures forever;

24 and rescued us from our foes,

for his steadfast love endures forever;

25 he who gives food to all flesh,

for his steadfast love endures forever.

26 Give thanks to the God of heaven,

for his steadfast love endures forever.

if your in doubt because the bible contradicts itself (like most other Christians) then i don't think that's a good reason to suddenly stop being a christian.

although i'm not christian, hinduism also contradicts itself sometimes. i think its a way to convey that it is allowed to contradict your beliefs sometimes.

Religion is probably one of the most personal journeys people can take and no-one can tell you what you should personally believe, its my belief that there are no people among us that are truly enlightened so I'd be wary of anyone that tries to tell you they have all the answers and tell you what you should believe the only person who can discover that for you is yourself. If I was you I'd look into the myriad of religions that abound in this world if nothing else you might discover a bit more about the world and what makes the people in it tick and you might find the perfect religion for yourself, it might be Christianity it might not.

The important thing is you stay true to what you believe and don't just follow what others tell you to otherwise you will not find happiness in a religion. If you can't find a faith that suits you (most of them have something in there ideologies or history that people find hard to accept) and still believe in God or a God pray to him or worship in your way, he'll understand, God, the Supreme Spirit or whoever is running this show is more likely to look kindly on someone who was true to themselves and what they believed than he will someone who just followed something they did not fully believe in because they were scared of being punished in the afterlife.

In the end its your journey, and your search for enlightenment I hope you find what your looking for.

Jesus loves you no matter what. He died on the cross for our sins. Its a pretty sweet deal for us if you ask me.

Jesus wasn't the son of the Christian god, he was just an aligner working to achieve the Final State as designed by our Onew Ruazenith. Proof of this is found by the miraculous acts he preformed as documented in the Bible, these were a gift from Ruazenith's avatar to help him guide humanity. When you add in Jesus' virgin birth and the fact that unicorns are in the Bible, we have a very solid case that Jesus Christ was working in accordance with an Avatar of Ruazenith, and was NOT the son of God.

So you ARE pagan. I knew you were lying. .

If you live as though God exists then:

If he does exist- you go to heaven. IF he doesn't, then no worries.

If you live as an Atheist then:

If he does not exist, then fine, if he does, eternity in hell.

By this logic, this is why you should be a Christian if you have doubts.

2 points

Yeah Pascal's wager is a bit flawed though, seeing as it can only be applied to a single religion. I used to agree with it, but now I can see it's a little foolish.

Nebeling(1117) Clarified

If he does exist- you go to heaven. IF he doesn't, then no worries.

That seriously underplays the fact that if he doesn't exist, then you have wasted time and energy on a lie created thousands of years ago. Being a Christian is a commitment, that's important and should be taken into account in your argument.

1 point

Maybe, this can help you with your inner conflict. I found it, but don't recall where; yet, it resonated with me and I make no claim to be Christian.

-Old Protestant Hymn:

"Know this, that every soul is

free,

To choose his life

and what he'll be;

For this eternal truth

is given,

That God will force no

man to heaven.

"He'll call, persuade, direct

aright,

And bless with wisdom,

love, and light,

In nameless ways be good

and kind,

But never force the human

mind.

I stand firm that my beliefs, religious or spiritual, are my business between myself and my Creator. I cannot beat someone over the head for stating what they believe in; that would be wrong, evil, and I sure do not want the same done to me.

There are many distractions, illusions, and feel good notions out there; I have checked a few, but I have always carried a sense that God was with me. God does not forsake, but we do forsake God; that has been what I have discovered, for myself. I do not know if any of this will help you, but I hope it does. Perhaps asking God would be the best option; maybe you have done so already.

Anyway, all the best to you on the beginning of your quest.

Communion wafers.

I'd say something else but there is literally nowhere to go but down from there.

The church I went to baked bread and we dipped it in grape juice.

I'm pretty sure if you don't use Jesus as a dipping sauce for Jesus you're being a Christian wrong.

1 point

Oh my god. Literally.

That is definitely up from communion wafers for sure. And also hilarious.

1 point

I enjoy a challenge. I will argue for why you should be a Christian. First, do you believe "true christians" are defined more by what they profess to believe, or how they act towards other people in general?

1 point

"Why ask why? Try Bud Dry." _

Being a Christian is good as long as that person believes in peace and no wars.

1 point

Then don't be a christian.

Or do, it's none of my business. Look at the evidence, listen to opinions from all sides, choose what makes sense, don't let anyone tell you what to believe, don't believe in a comforting lie over an inconvenient truth, and try not to be an ignorant or arrogant dickhead. There, that's probably the best life advice I can ever give you.

Here, look up this book: Why There Is No God: Simple Responses to 20 Common Arguments for the Existence of God by Armin Navabi. Then look up a book on Christian apologetics and decide for your damn self. You don't owe me, or anyone, allegiance in faith on some shit that, ultimately, no one has all the answers to.

Bon voyage on your journey of self discovery. Don't ever stop questioning everything.

You should be a Christian to avoid Hellfire and live eternally in the shining glory of God. Just look at the trees and stuff, what are the odds of complex life arising from and explosion in space out of nothing before time even started?

2 points

I can't tell if you're being serious or extremely satirical. Regardless, do you have any other constructive advice?

Stryker(849) Clarified
2 points

Extremely satirical. Personally I think you should do what makes you happy to the extent that it doesn't disrupt someone else tying to do what makes them happy. If you actually believe in the Christian god, and that is what you want to believe then be a Christian.

I choose to live my life not by what I want to believe, but what I have reason to believe. It is just a different way of living, I never assume I have found absolute truth, rather I adapt my opinion as I am presented with evidence, not to what I want to believe, but to what the evidence leads to.

I don't believe in an afterlife, so the most moral answer I can give you is you should do what truly makes you happy, and if the happiest life for you would be that of a Christian, no one should fault you for choosing it.
