With that statement, Snyder tried to shut the door on 50 years of debate about his NFLfranchise's name and logo.
Apparently, 40 years of protests and lawsuits from Native American groups haven't gotten through to Snyder.
This one is near and dear to me. I went to Marquette, a University I have much consternation with...afterall, they took the Warriors name and changed it to The Golden Eagles. Similar debate...but not really. The definition of a warrior is "a brave or experienced soldier or fighter". The definition of a redskin is "offensive, an American indian". So this is what I don't understand, two organizations with tons of cash one says yes, Warrior must be offensive so let's just change it. The other says redskin isn't offensive...what is the problem here?
Very Nice! It is a good school, but their decisions of the past (supporting aparthied) while then pretending to cave to indigenous Americans (who were not asking for the name to be changed) has made me very unhappy with them.
That's like naming a team the Detroit Black People... and I'm part Native American too. Judging from your pic, I'd have to say I have you beat percentage-wise lol.
Rock on. I just see no problem with the name. The people who have a problem with the name, they are the racists because they infer negativity on being Native American.
Everyone born and raised in America is a "native American". The term native American offends me because some "Natice Americans" act like they are the only ones who have the right to call themselves natives of this country. The time to stop this racial shit is now. All Americans are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights such as life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We do not have a black America, a white America, an Arab America, a Jewish America, and so on. We have on America, and get ready for my catchphrase: we are all one human race.

Oh, so you aren't part American Indian? You're just from America? Lol okay.
Just because you don't like the term doesn't mean it isn't proper. They call themselves Native Americans because they settled here first.

What racial shit? You mean the Redskins? Lol

Oh, so you aren't part American Indian? You're just from America? Lol okay. I am part Cherokee, not that it matters.
Just because you don't like the term doesn't mean it isn't proper. You have that backwards. I do not like the term because it is not proper, and it is quite ethnocentrist. They call themselves Native Americans because they settled here first. They are no more or less American than any other American. What is your point? Ah Hell fire, this is sad. My points are that silly ethnic differences do not matter because we are all one human race, that being a member of a certain tribe does not make you more American, and it is so unfair to say that non "Native Americans" are not native well, Americans on account of there ethnicity. That is a slap in the face to every native American who is not a member of a certain tribe, and creates a second class citizen group. Jesus and Dr. King would not go for this, and neither will I. I am an American, not a PA Dutch/Native/Whatever else American, I am a human American, and that my dear is how it should be.
Ugh... it seems like everyone is part Cherokee... even Jeeps!
You have that backwards. I do not like the term because it is not proper, and it is quite ethnocentrist.
I was correct. The Great Spirit told me so.
They are no more or less American than any other American.
Their ancestry goes deeper into America's past than any other Americans.

That doesn't have anything to do with whether the term "Redskins" is offensive or not.
that being a member of a certain tribe does not make you more American, and it is so unfair to say that non "Native Americans" are not native well
We call American born citizens...Americans. The American Indians are called Native Americans. Now, by definition all American-born citizens are natives of their country, but we only describe one group as "Native Americans"... and nobody, except you, seems to have a problem with that. Should we get rid of the term African-American? After all, they weren't born in Africa. They prefer to be called that rather than Negro, just like American Indians prefer Native American over redskin.
Ugh... it seems like everyone is part Cherokee... even Jeeps! Especially in Pennsylvania. I was correct. The Great Spirit told me so. You trolling, broski? Their ancestry goes deeper into America's past than any other Americans. All Americans are equal. That doesn't have anything to do with whether the term "Redskins" is offensive or not. Yes it does. For that reason, we should not care about silly names or terms that refer to ethnicity. It is wholly bigoted and preferencial to treat one ethnic group as more American than another. Maybe we should just go back to segregation, because that is the bullshit mindset behind the name "Native American". Not.
Guys, let's be honest. It's inconsiderate at the very least. Imagine if 20 years from now Berlin named their soccer team "The Jews", or the Japanese built a stadium and named it Nanking. Those examples seem more extreme only because we talk about those incidents a lot more. Why? Because they're more recent AND we weren't the bad guys.
Americans have a bloody history with the natives which is nothing short of a genocide. It seems pretty clear to me that that name is what's left of a time when Native Americans were seen as sub-human and were being paraded around the country like a circus act (like bears, lions, and Bengals I might add). So I think it's legitimate for people to take offense to that name and want it changed.
That being said, I don't deny that (minus the context) it is a pretty cool name for a team, and I love their logo! If it weren't for the history, it'd be just like the Vikings.
Regardless of how we care about free speech, sports is a service industry with the goal of making as much money as possible. A person in this day and age who has a racist product (a sports team called the "redskins") is going to lose support, thus losing money.
So it's likely and recommended that he change the name of his team.
Its extremely offensive! I mean, it might as well be named the towel head, carpet riding, chicken pluckin, tower smashin, bomb tickin, lamp rubbin, sand monkeys!
The meaning of words, concepts, etc., change over time. When the term Red Skins comes up, people think of the team, not Native American Indians. Besides, who else, but the Red Skins, is better suited to be the Cowboys' rival? ;)
You know... on second thought, who really cares? It's not like they're portraying Native Americans negatively. They have a cool logo, they're a decent team... it shouldn't matter that they are called the Redskins.
I think that by being offended by the word Redskins, we're showing that we truly are racist. If we weren't racist, then, nobody would be offended by anything. It's just a color. Nothing negative about it. All skin colors are equal.
