Will another religion ever overtake Christianity as most popular religion?

I think that, eventually, as the populace becomes more educated and everyone becomes more scientifically aware, in a VERY long time, atheism will eventually become the most popular religion.

Atheism is not a religion...

To say Atheism isn't a religion is to say that every one in existence is religious, and is suggesting that there is no such type of person who isn't religious.

Atheism is the state of not being religious.

Atheism is not a religion...

Atheism may or may not be a religion depending on your understanding of what religion or for that matter atheism is. Who is the authority on what these terms mean? General consensus? Oops

To say Atheism isn't a religion is to say that every one in existence is religious, and is suggesting that there is no such type of person who isn't religious.

According to my understanding of what religion is, everyone is religious. i.e. Everyone has a belief/value system. I am open to improving the way I interpret that term and if you present a more logical definition, I'll adopt it.

Atheism is the state of not being religious.

So in your opinion all religions are theistic or worship based? I disagree. My religion is not only atheistic but also anti-theistic, so I am proof that you are mistaken.

Religion is defined as "a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs." [1]

Atheism is defined as "the doctrine or belief that there is no God."

Since nearly all atheists use scientific knowledge to support their believe of the cause of the universe, atheism is technically classified as a religion.

Islam, the way things are going. It's the natural progression of things. Just like the Star Wars movies.

Side: Yes

Simply due to the birth rate associated with it, Islam will overtake Christianity within the next few decades. But it should be noted that unless the Islamic world undergoes a renaissance, their popularity will not last. The current Islamic world is too "unwestern", and they risk the wrath of the Western world unless they eliminate the radicals and extremists.

Actually Christianity will be overtaken when the rapture occurs and the antichrist announces the One World Religion to take place it would overtake Christianity because you would have to believe in that One World Religion which I am not going to believe in that.

Sure I think the sect of people who refuse to identify exclusively with one specific sect will grow to be larger than those identifying as Christian relatively soon.

Well, in a way. In time, man will finally realize that there is no such thing as God, or they will move on and find some new pagan God.

Did Islam not recently overtake Christianity? I seem to recall hearing that it had.

It has been seen through out history, different religions rise and fall as others gain followers and wipe out the old. The only time that there will be one ever lasting religion is when they think up one that absolutely everyone agrees with, which will never happen. There for people will keep fighting for the beliefs either by war or by word till humans die out and the next species take over who may make their own religion and then the cycle begins again.

Excluding Atheism and non-orthodox religions (like Deism or Spiritualism), Christianity, to me, will be the last Monotheistic religion for quite some time. The reason is mainly because of its strength in the Western world, where most of the power currently lies.

While Islam is the fastest growing religion, it is currently a religion that dominates a developing world that is, in many ways, an enemy to the West. Islam is associated with terrorism and anti-west attitudes.

If Christianity is to fall, it will fall along with all the other religions that currently dominate. And it will fall to Atheism and Deism, which are not religions.

This is just a guess. Truly, anything is possible. However, this is how I see it happening if it is to happen.

As you say, anything is possible, and it is wise for you to stipulate that this is mere conjecture. But your thought process makes a lot of sense and seems quite supportable.

No I dont believe that any other religion is strong enough to overtake Christianity as the most popular religion.

Side: No

Right now in the United States, No. In the future, que sera, sera.
