I would want to live forever, or at least until the end of the last civilization in the universe, given that by that point I'd get to live with and understand them. But if someone just told me forever, I'd agree. Here's why? People who believe one should die believe that if you make use of the time, you won't be sad correct? They also think that one hundred years feels like a ridiculously long time once you get there... So, the end of the species could be millions of years away. I wouldn't exactly be worried. I'd just choose to be immortal. I'd prefer immortality, but the end of the species is so long that I'd feel I have nothing to be scared of. Also, if immortality existed realistically, it probably wouldn't be real immortality in that it might be something one could end more easily. So, given the realistic possibility I'd take that too if it counts for the debate. I'd see people grow old and die, but I'd also get to see my distant descendants and live in the future, which would be cool. I might even get enough education that I could understand the meaning of life by 500 years old, which would be cool. In real life, one would probably choose how long they live for, which would be fine by me but I think I'd last pretty long time before I chose to die. I'd like to see the year 50,000 or whatever for sure as opposed to 2015. Millions of years of life for me. Hopefully I didn't go too off topic there. Side: Forever

You would need to define immortality. Other than not dying, what about cognitive ability? Would we still grow old? Is there a limit to mental capacity? Physical appearance? Recall? There are many aspects that change with time. Which parts will be static? For example, if we are given infinite mental capacity along with immortality, then there would be no need for reality. You would be able to create a universe in your mind even after civilization/universe ends. Side: Forever

One reason why we try hardest in our lives is because we don't live forever, and that we must try our hardest in order to use that life wisely. If someone was immortal, they wouldn't spend their deepest efforts in using a better life, and thus making the life more useless than a life with death. And thus i support mortal over immortal. Well first, there is the obvious consideration that not everybody believes that when you die you will be with god. But putting religious differences aside, while immortality would definitely have its downsides, someone like me who is infinitely curious about the future of humanity, especially the ramifications of our technological advances, would have the opportunity to see them. Immortality would allow you to travel the world and see everything there is to see and then, if we advanced enough to truly explore the stars, the possibilities become endless. Of course there's still the "everyone you know and love will die" aspect, and that would suck. Side: Forever
But what happens when an asteroid or something hits the earth and you are the only living thing left. That would get boring very quickly. That is what I assume you mean by the downside. Now if you could live til all humans dies off, then that is a different story. Side: Forever
