People on this site tried to brainwash me to leave.

I never gave in and never backed down and am proud of my perseverance.

I live in America and own a tv. Half of the time I spend (probably more) watching television is commercials. I'm pretty sure I'm a brainwashing victim.

Now has it taken root? I don't believe so. I try to always make sure my ideas are my own, yet with only my mind to compare it to, I guess I'll never know.

Every day everyone of us is fair game for brainwashing. Advertisements are a type which we are all exposed to. The goal of advertisements are to get people to think a certain way and thus, act a certain way.

I guess someone could argue that product placement is a form of brainwashing, so i guess we all have some degree of it. Still, that is how society works, so i am not ashamed to say i like what i like just because it may be mainstream stuff.

Side: Yes

I don't think brainwash victims know they were brainwashed.

Not if they don't come to the realization that they were being brainwashed

Brainwashing is a tricky concept, and I tend to consider that it require a greater intentionality and awareness than is readily provable. Certainly, we are conditioned but that conditioning has not substantively been proven to be expressly intentional. And at any rate, the individuals or groups who would be doing the brainwashing have themselves been conditioned into their actions in some form. Then again, consider that I am a secular determinist and let that inform your reading of my post.

People tend to get freaked out about brainwashing, and I am curious as to why more people do no think it is horrifying that quite possibly no one really is really in control of the conditioning that is happening. Personally, as a determinist at ease with my perspective, that does not bother me but I know many people whom I would expect to have that reaction. Perhaps our very preoccupation with conspiracy theories around brainwashing is grounded in that very fear though.
