Yes, and just another account because I think downvote is a little too pessimistic. :)

Technically, users are already anonymous since users' true identities are not normally attached to a given user name.

Anonymity gives people a greater sense of freedom to express their ideas, especially those that are unpopular at the time, and it pushes society to explore new directions and question strongly held beliefs, leading to further development as a civilisation.

Being able to express something anonymously is especially valuable in societies that impose deterrents against free speech because it is acts as a layer of protection for people's safety.

Uncomfortable ideas should be freely explored and anonymity helps in driving such discussions.

I agree, but I think he's talking directly about anonymity on CD. Could you imagine what would happen to CD if we had as many troll debates/arguments as say, /g/?

If people could just say whatever they want without consequence, they become belligerent.

I feel like it should say who down votes you, too. Because that's

kind of a copout to an argument. It says, "I disagree with you, but don't have the ability or facts to argue my point."

but then we would have people just spamming eachother with hate.

And that differs from what I said how?

Other than the obvious lack of effort to make a valid and grammatically correct point.

Because in a real world debate, it's hard to be an "anonymous" unless you've got a paperbag over your head, but in which case, you'll seem like a joke and no one will want to take you seriously. So, basically, I guess what I'm saying is that if someone feels the need for anonymity in an online debate forum, they probably shouldn't just say anything at all because there's only so many reason worth hiding yourself.

its a good thing this isnt the real world bc in the real world, people dont say their real feelings. online you can insult and be pissed off freely.

Nicole's right,

plus it kind of already is, unless we choose for it not to be. Like, my name is my name, and yours Jake, plus we have our pick, and I have links and everything else.

But we don't have all that. I could name myself like 1234567 and have a picture of a question mark as my avatar, then it would be anonymous I guess.

Side: No

Well, I do that.

But at least you know that I am always Pineapple. I am consistently Pineapple, and you know my opinions and can hold me accountable for them across the board.

It's that integrity that makes the difference between calling yourself "1234567" and being anonymous.

good point.

Yeah good point, I don't see a good reason for it. But it would make things interesting.

bc then all the scaredy noobs would always use it.

People post anonymously because they are scarred to stand up for what they really believe in. If you can't stand up for it, then it shouldn't even be important enough for you to post.

Also, it would lead to tons of riculous spam and whatnot.

Side: No

Absolutely not! You're already hiding behind a screen name and unless you're me, everything you might write down about yourself could be bogus. Be that as it may, don't you wish to be connected to that name no matter what? To be proud of the things you've written and the points you've brought across the boards. If you must be anonymous then I would guess you're a wuss with nothing to say...Anonymous!

Side: No

Take responsibility for your words. I hate spineless people who feel that they can spout their bullshit and not take the blame/credit for it. I mean, grow a backbone, really.
