An important question that must be answered is what the definition of "peace" is? Is it no physical violence? Is it societal equality? Is it universal happiness? Is it no tensions?

Throughout history there have been periods of war and periods of peace. Therefore, yes, peace is clearly possible. We just need to understand the circumstances which lead to peace and those which lead to war. Then we can work to maintain stability.

I think when humanity is extinct, only then will there be world peace.

Wildlife survives in an environment that is independent of us. If we are extinct the environment will remain this way and life will continue to adapt. The only life that depends on us are domesticated animals and cultivated plants, who would likely go extinct in most cases.

Can we do away with conflict? No.

Can we develop better and better conflict resolution methods? Yes

“True peace is not the absence of conflict: it is the prevalence of non-violent conflict.”

~ atypican

If violence is viewed as "the violation of X" then one must consider what it is that the philosophy of non-violence seeks to leave inviolate. Since the ordinances of political or religious institutions are so often merely in place to serve overly narrow interests, there are often times situations where our personal "ordinances" (individual morality) should trump those codified by institution X

Avoiding conflict, in the interest of "peace" is merely cowardice. well those are the thoughts (of questionable relevance) that pop into my mind thinking about the debate title.

Yes - Kill everyone else in the world who doesn't share your opinions and views and you'll have world peace. If not your never going to get it. Even if you get it physically you wont get it psychologically.

Side: yes

Yes.

War is often caused by one group having something the other group wants, or doesn't want them to have, i.e. oil, weapons, certain religions, governments, freedoms (lack thereof), and more. These wars could have been prevented by a logical, diplomatic debate and agreement, rather than the oft-too-rash aggressiveness.

Contrastingly, you could have a somewhat Orwell-ian influenced look, where war still exists, but it does not effect the people, to their knowledge.

Start a nuclear war and watch as everyone just sort of kills over and yeah, then you'll have some world peace alright.

But know ones alive. Its not peace but distruction for the world.

no, there would still be problems, just no one to complain about them.

In order for this the world would have to be a utopia. It's not human nature to be peaceful. We have differentiating opinions which cause conflict.

Side: No

no, as there are too many people in the world to live happily without bumping elbows

No. There will always be Political Controversial parts that the world will never agree on.

Side: No

If it hasn't happened by now, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for it. For every liberal claiming that world peace is possible, there's at least one conservative wanting to take him out.... and I don't mean like.... to eat dinner out ;)

By the time we come up with a solution to world peace, the world will be overcrowding and there will be discord because of that. Besides, for the world to live in perfect peace, much of the world would have to "think Western" (or at least think in one mindset).

Side: No

This is sad to say, but there is too much hatred and unrest in the world for there ever to be world peace.
