Harvey Milk did die for a cause, he was assassinated for his being open with his sexuality and bringing it into public office and pushing for equal rights for gays in California. I firmly believe that he was and still is a symbol for gay rights and equal rights amongst the people of this country and does deserve a day in his name, at LEAST in the state of California, in which he died for in his belief for equality amongst people bearing a sexuality that which was not yet fully excepted. If it makes it easier try and picture any oppressed people who have gained their rights, you will see many people like Harvey Milk at the lead who have days reserved for them.
I'm sort of in speculation. I don't care that he got a day, good for him, I just would vote against it if given the choice. I don't really find him that influential, but then again, I don't really know what it was like to be an openly gay politician back then.
In the end, though, just because you're the first whatever doesn't mean you deserve a day.
Martin Luther King didn't know he was going to die "over it." But even if you view race and sexual preference to be different, there still is a large gay community in our country and this man does stand out as a leader in their history. Also i dont think it's something to "LOL" at either, the man was threatened hundreds of times, in a similar manner that King was I'm sure, death threats, constantly. I'm not saying school in California should be stopped for a day, but the recognition is deserved at least. He went through a lot fighting for what he believed in, if only to be a testament to determination and our countries whole freedom thing, he deserves a day.
because someone is killed does not make them nobler. You then brought up how he received death threats before hand, as if that makes a difference. Plenty of people receive death threats, especially Bill O'Reilly.
Bill O'Reilly fights for what he believes in and he receives death threats because of it. If he were to be assassinated, would you say that he deserves a day? Or is it because he's a tv personality instead of a politician (I don't even see how being a politician actually makes you a better person).
I brought up the death threats because someone tried to argue that he wasn't willing to die for his cause because he did not know that he would be assasinated.
If somebody fights for something you don't agree with and are willing to die and they get killed, and they had accomplished a lot, do you think they should get their own day?
So we are in agreement that if the masses believed Bill O'Reilly was a good man then he would deserve a day.
But a lot of people don't like Bill and a lot of people don't like Harvey. So we must be in agreement that(if Bill O'Reilly was assassinated) they both would equally deserve a day.
"as long as someone commits no horrific evils, than yes. They can have a day"
What horrific evils did Bill commit? He fights for something he believes in and gets death threats. So by tour definition he should get a day if he gets assassinated.
"I don't think Bill O'Reily has done anything significant"
That's your opinion, just like it's plenty of peoples opinion that Milk didn't accomplish anything important. And plenty of other people have the opinion that Bill has accomplished a lot.
So tell me, what makes your opinion so special?
I'm willing to let Milk have a day even though I'm not a huge fan, it wont bother me. But I think you're to partisan to let somebody like Bill have a day.
So by tour definition he should get a day if he gets assassinated.
No, and plase don't twist my words or take them out of context. No, Bill Oreily has done nothing horrifc... Intact he's done nothing terrific at all. If you think bill Oreily deserves a day, then can lobby for a Bill Oreily day... I doubt that will go anywhere, but knock yourself out...
My opinion is fact. Harvey Milk fough for and accomplished a lot.
What is Bill Oreily doing? Who is he? Again, he a television personalty! Just like Glenn Beck, just like Anderson Cooper, just like Nancy Grace! They get paid millions of dollars to have an opinion and voice it!
He does not care about you!
It's not that I won't let a republican have a day, I just don't believe that Bill Oreily specifically, deserves a day.
"If you think bill Oreily deserves a day, then can lobby for a Bill Oreily day... I doubt that will go anywhere, but knock yourself out..."
First of all, this is hypothetical. Remember when I said "If he was assassinated"? Talk about twisting words.
My point isn't that Bill should have a day. I'm not trying to lobby for that or anything. I'm just wanting to know why your opinion is more important than those who think Bill O'Reilly has accomplished a lot through voicing his opinion.
I'm sorry, my bad. I meant to say that "my opinion is a fact." I only said it that way because you tried to belittle the fact by stating it was simply my opinion. Harvey Milk was a great man, he is widely esteemed, and is a ligitimate hero.
And no, I wasn't hypocritical. Everything was under the hypothetical umbrella of Bill Oreily being assasinated. If he's assasinated, knock yourself out lobbying for a Bill Oreily day.
You just jump on any opportunity to not realize your own stupidty.
Look. I was the first freshman in my school to make the marching trumpet line (youtube avon marching black and gold 2009). Does that mean I deserve my own day? No. Peyton Manning was the first NFL player to get 4 MVP awards. Does he deserve his own day? No. My point is that if we had a day for everyone that did something first, we would have to redesign the calendar. So just because Harvey Milk was the first gay candidate for governor does not mean he gets his own day.
How many people in American history have been more influencial than him? There are not enough days in the week! Do you have a Lincoln day? Roosevelt day? Schwarzenegger day? Get a day for the real American heroes, first!
I like how you quoted the word 'man' like that. If you want i think we could open a debate on homophobia and self loathing with your post as the example. You chiming in with hatred isn't debating, its re-assurance.
