Good intentions lead to unintended consequences

Dilbert cartoon reflects reality

Why is it that no matter how good your intentions are, there will always be some unintended consequences to your actions?

There is no doubt that with the best intentions results can often effect people, events and outcomes we hadn't even thought of. Unintended consequences can be good or bad and sometimes we'll never know exactly how those consequences manifested.

I believe that to do nothing and simply allow life to unfold before us is to decide to have no say in our lives as well as no positive impact on others. We cannot always be responsible for unintended consequences of an act that was good to begin with. I remember being in charge of an ongoing clothing and food pantry at my church after my mother passed away. Our sister church in the deepest part of the hell-hole area of The Bronx was the recipient of these gifts. On one glorious day in the fall our sister church came to collect what we had for them in their rickety old van and it was packed solid when they were through. When they got back to their church to unload they were accosted by three men with guns who took not only the van, but what was inside. We came to find out the merchandise was sold for drugs! They found the van some days later and eventually the gun wielding trio who promptly went to jail on that and other charges. Our intentions were clear and they were good. What happened that day ended up to have serious consequences for the poor of the church and those men, but I never stopped the clothing and food pantry because of all the good it did.

We must never stop striving for good. We must never stop aiding people who are in need and we must do so no matter what it comes to. To do nothing is to give up...and that is one thing I can never do.

I was thinking more along the lines of a Sponge Bob episode where... wait, this isn't helping my argument, is it?

Great post Kukla! I agree that we must continue striving for good in all that we do even when we encounter setbacks.

Thank you borme...that was very kind. We must allow nothing to stand in our way. Setbacks in life are a given but when we let them defeat us, we've lost we are still capable of...and that would hurt so many who need us because they cannot do for themselves.

This is actually a rhetorical question. As long as human evolution is allowed to follow nature's course, there will always be a percentage of humans that will try to take advantage of any given system. But if we are to guide our own evolution, who gets to decide our course? And more importantly, what unintended consequences will there be as people try to take advantage of the system meant to improve on the human condition? Maybe we should just do nothing.

Well, bad intentions can also lead to unintended consequences. Hell, getting out of bed in the morning can lead to unintended consequences.

We can never predict with 100% accuracy the results of our actions. All we can do is try our best to predict the outcomes and take what seems to be the best path at the time.
