imagration idea
my teacher had an idea for imagrants without papers. if they get arrested or found or if they turn themself in. why not give them the chance of becoming legal by serving the army or other type of milltary form and bring back american soilders to replace them and after a 2 year service they earn their citizenship for america...

hmm this is new. i dnt think i've ever heard this one before. But i think i'd have to agree with your teacher. there's nothing wrong with giving immigrants a chance to make something of themselves and we would be shoooting two birds with one stone if we could get some of the soldiers to return home. this seems like a win win to me. Generally this is a good idea, but there are problems. What happens if the applicant to the country is either too young or too old to join the military? Would we not allow them to gain citizenship, or would a young person be required to join the military after high school or be deported? If so, then what happens to the older people? An age cap on immigration? A similar question is what happens to disabled people? They might be of age to join the military, but physically or mentally disabled and therefore not fit to do so. I imagine treatment for a disability would be a major reason to come to this country, so what do we do? Side: kick out of country

I'm not sure if you're aware of this but some people don't want to be united states citizens. They live here as residents. The most common reason, I've heard, is so they can still vote from their countries of origin. Forcing someone into the military isn't a wise choice. Since when did that "earn" citizenship? (i mean legally speaking, not morally) The big question is what is the cost of having immigrants here? And what kind of efficient model or policy can we put into place that will regulate immigrants. This isn't a new topic but I like how it's being portrayed in the daily news. It's as though everyone is pointing fingers and not taking the blame. We've gotten to the point of no return and what needs to happen is to put something into place that actually works! great 52 page article on: The Economic Logic of Illegal Immigration http://www.cfr.org/content/publications/ Side: Tuff choice

From the page "CURRENT U.S. IMMIGRATION POLICY For a foreign citizen, there are three options to live and work in the United States: Become a legal permanent resident, obtain a temporary work visa, or enter the country illegally and remain here as an unauthorized immigrant. In 2005, there were thirty-five million immigrants living in the United States, of which 30 percent were in the country illegally and 3 percent were temporary legal residents (Figure 1).6 The foreign-born now make up 12 percent of the U.S. population. Each type of immigration—legal permanent, temporary legal, and illegal—is subject to its own set of admission policies and behavioral restrictions." http://www.cfr.org/content/publications/ Side: Tuff choice
