religion; good or bad in todays society?
nearly everyone gets into heated debated about whether or not some deity created the world or controls the universe (personally makes me giggle). when it really comes down to it does religion as a whole help our world or slow it down?
1. I did not state whether or not I personally think religion is something good or bad
2. religion in some sense is a necessary aspect to the world it helps build moral values but sense clearly no one will EVER agree on one religion, people fight about it its created war and tyrants.
3. the reason i am "fucking" continuing it is because it hasn't been settled. if you had to have open heart surgery would you like the doctor not to continue while your chest is still open; if you would I'm certain that would make you the "dumbass"
Religion is a necessity in society, it is a moral issue. Without a higher power to answer to, it leaves u only the government to answer to, and history repeatedly tells us that option is deadly and never works. Would you rather put your faith in someone of a unnatural power or pray to your senator and hope he doesn't mis use his power over you? This is why throughout history governments have tried to break religion, they would prefer to have the god like power over you.
Please show how society has ever been left to answer to a god? You try to show us how evil secular government is, but you don't contrast it with anytime where we've been accountable to a god. Please show us that religion is anything but a man-made institution.
I never said government was evil...but they are human, and any human can misuse or abuse power. By putting your faith into an intangible, that trust is not used against you. As for examples, that yet to be seen for you and I.

That makes me think that your view of secular governments is pretty low, and deadly would seem to be evil.
but they are human, and any human can misuse or abuse power.
They can be evil, and humans can definitely abuse power. It's our job to be informed citizens and fight against evil and corruption.

Please explain what intangible belief I should hold, and give evidence why I should. Unfortunately, if your faith is in one of the major religions of today, then when you act upon those beliefs, that can be held against you. For instance, a common belief is that homosexuality is a sin, and the common action religious people take is to deny rights to homosexuals. This can definitely be held against you.
I feel a strong need for government, but think that as with any organization, the more it grows the more corrupt it becomes. Deadly is yet to be seen, I hope it doesnt happen in mine or my childrens lifetime, but bloated government tends to eventually lean that way as I stated before, history has proven, I hope you dont need me to cite examples of that?
Second Point:
Unfortunately the majority of the people either have no skin in the game (i.e. do not pay taxes) and therefore remain uninformed and use their vote as one would choose for a talent contest, so fighting corruption can be difficult for those who stay informed.
Third Point:
Oddly I have many homosexual friends, I am not a "church goer", but yes I feel homosexuality is a sin, but I am also a conservative, and therefore believe that it is none of my business, i most certainly do not want to deny their rights because i prefer to take care of myself and not dwell on how they choose to live, it is only the liberal view point that wants to get involved and try to make everything better even if you dont want them to.
As for what belief YOU should hold, again, I would never force my opinions on you, i simply answered the debate question with what I PERSONALLY feel.
A couple thoughts. First, if your not going to act on your faith, then your not the person I'm concerned about. I'm worried about those that fly planes into buildings for their faith, and also the ones that deny human rights to others.
Secondly, I think you are very wrong, most people have a lot of skin in the game. A lot of people pay taxes, and the decisions made by our government affect all of us. People should stay more informed, and be good citizens.
Nothing you've said has shown religion is good for society. You haven't shown any evidence that we have ever been accountable to a deity, and that believing in a deity has made any difference in a society. As far as I'm concerned, you've just been rambling and not backing up your claims with evidence.
Ok so if you are worried about those who act on their faith and cause harm to others based on faith? we need to identify THEM and not blame all religions for the acts of one religion. I. of course dont know you, but let's assume you like Cheetos, and your neighbor likes Fritos, but Fritos make you kill people, are you worried when you see your neighbor standing outside eating Fritos ? should you ban all chips? or just Fritos?
And i guess you are right, Ive never seen Jesus, and if I do I will be worried for me, so I cannot show you evidence. I guess im just a rambler.
And what is that "agenda" that you seem to think the churches have? Unless you are speaking of the Jerimiah Wright's or the Al Sharptons, I am pretty sure most churches have only one agenda, a moral society, most pastor's stay out of washington and politics, they teach morals, charity and civility, is that a bad thing?

Sustaining themselves, attaining political power.

Churches are run by people. A priest is a person. And most people have a desire for power. This is why we see such divisive issues like abortion and gay rights pushed by churches. They give the churches a way to mobilise their followers and use them as a means to obtain votes.
this is true i have seen this. Put there are also good churches and true God following leaders who really do want to help others and save them from themselves. There is a good side. Remeber When the ending time comes and when Jesus christ comes again there very little amount of churches Jesus will call Godly. All the rest will vanish and will be devoured by lies and deceit.

Their voices are muted by the likes of televangelists and megachurch pastors. People don't want to be saved from themselves, to lead a life of humbleness and charity, they would rather be lied to and told that god will give them money and health, and that Jesus supports their selfish ways as long as they just believe in him and donate money to the ministry.
That's why men like Ted Haggard and Pat Robertson were so successful. They were religious entrepreneurs who saw a market for selling religiously sanctioned narcissism and hatred.

I don't rely on gods to do the work of men. The only way to vanquish these people is to expose them and humiliate them.
I think religion in our society is bad. Everyone fights and argues over who they think is right or who or what they believe in. it slows everything down and just makes things more frustrating and aggravating for everyone.
I believe everyone should be entitled to claim whatever religion they wish. But, for some, that means completely and utterly defiling others' religions. I do not believe religion is a good thing today.
Religion is a man-made institution, and can be corrupted like any other. The problem with religion is it teaches people to rely on a force that is higher then themselves, most times a god, and yet does not provide any good evidence that would justify the belief. It's dangerous when any institution does this, and religion has consistently done this.
Religion moves into the realm of evil when it starts to deny human rights/equality to others based on race, sexual orientation, and creed. Secular societies have had to drag religions kicking and screaming into the modern era, forcing them to accept that slavery was wrong. Today we attempt to do the same with granting rights to homosexuals, but religion seems to battle us at every turn.
Religion today sphere mean immorality, piece.but if we talk about d incidents happening in now a days... can put question about its god or bad for society..the religious mans are indulge in taking money to create dere own palace....most of rich & middle class r dere with dem & support them....so itss bad for socity.....in both ways some positive & negtive pointss are there.........
