While I am not saying that it is better than ever, there is a lot of interesting underground music with all the aspects of older styles and newer ones.

Modern mainstream media is dry and cynical so much in fact that a dancing tripe such as Lady Ga Ga is considered original because she wears a hat made of telephones. The media animal is so big now that a lot of people don't develop a personal taste, rather they follow what is being thrown at them by MTV (a channel of shit) or E Entertainment (even worse) etc, etc. Artists are overly made-up, manufactured Barbie dolls and all too clean Gangstas or depressed Emos, this stuff appeals to the modern teenage markets that want to be these things. It isn't about the music any more in this perspective, rather a position or clique to fit into. These are markets where money is to be made and teenagers will spend it, therefore most music that is heard on Radio or seen on TV is from artists that make the most money.

I am not too aware of underground music in the states but here in Europe especially in Britain it is thriving. One of the major problems for underground music is file sharing, this does affect the bigger players as they are no longer just musicians, they are Fashion Designers, they have Perfumes, they have a whole cache of merchandise to bring in money. Small time artists will create music as their sole output they have no choice but to put them on line for others to freely take, this is the only way they can get noticed. It is a perversion but it does create a new hobby of finding great music on line.

Times have dramatically changed. People's music tastes have dramatically changed. It's hard to compare different musical styles and genres, especially through the ages. Music made a decade ago is completely different and enjoyed completely differently to music made now.

The main reason for this change is money. Commercialisation. Capitalism encourages it. Exploitation etc. This means that music is made for monetary gain rather than for the sake of great music or as an art. It means musicians make music to please people enough to empty their pockets rather than making music to promote their feelings or thoughts, to express themselves.

Rihanna was great when she started out. I used to listen to her songs because they were her own style, original something you knew she did for the love of music. Now she's just another female in the industry. Turned into a sex symbol, making bullshit songs that either contradict or talk shit outright, talking about lifestyles or themes that are not her and are nothing to do with her. Sure the songs might be catchy... but it could be done by ANY other female. What she did before could only be done by her.

50Cent. Not a very good rapper. But he's got big muscles. The cap looks good on him sideways. He got shot a few times. But he's a shit rapper. Yet he's probably the biggest rapstar out there. Not because of his great ability in music, but because he is a tool. Advertised. Appeals to the market - which sells. His music can be and is done better by other rappers... but better musical talent doesn't mean shit in America.

I'm generally talking about mainstream urban music. There's thousands of underground artists who still hold it down, some to make good music and some to make money. But I still respect them more than most of the mainstream cunts out there.

This type of question cannot be a debate. It is impossible because people have their own favorite style of music. If you go to a group of country artists, they will say that country music is the best. If you go to a group of rap artists, they will say that rap music is the best.

It depends on what you like.

I can say that today's music there is more a variety. And that is a great thing.

Of course that is true, but in general, the argument is not pointing at which genre of music is the best, but it is saying that todays genre of music, techno pop, or house, is the best. The side "todays music is crap" is arguing for the other typed of music, the music of the past, such as rock and roll, and jazz. So it is absolutely possible to argue this debate.

Today's music uses the same boring riffs and lyrics that don't mean anything. As far as I'm concerned, that makes for crap music

You should try listening to some actual artistically created music and not the popular rubbish.

I have, and I am continually disappointed. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there' lots of great contemporary music out there, but, as you say, all the stuff that actually makes it and becomes famous is rubbish. Being a classical musician myself, the only modern music I have heard is 'the popular rubbish', and I don't voluntarily listen to it (I only hear it coming from my brother's room, or on the bus, in shops, you get the idea). It really breaks my heart to know that there are some wonderful musicians who will never make it big time, and some do with a crap, 2 chord song.

Today's music just doesn't have the passion it did before. People's taste changes every day to whatever goes on on MTV!

Its not bad but its not better. Old classics will live forever but todays rap and pop wont compared to Jimmy hendrix, the beatles, the clash , and you cant forget the ramones.

I believe that todays music is absolute junk. The media glorifies what today we call music, a bunch of synthesized beats. What comes to mind when you think about music? How do you create it? The main thought that comes to mind is instruments. The music today, though, has no instruments, unless of course you listen to One Direction, and there was that one time where Lil' Wayne managed to pick up a guitar... But even so, when we think about todays music, we are generally thinking about the majority, not independent people who listen to Andie music, but the mainstream people who follow the latest trends.

Today, the trend is tech no pop. There is nothing in it. It is not even made by the person who claims they made it, for example, Flo Roda claims all credit for "his" song, Good Feeling, however, if you look on this website, you can see that he sampled Etta James' Somethings Got A Hold On Me:

http://www.whosampled.com/sample/112961/ Flo-Rida-Good-Feeling-Etta-James-Something's-Got-a-Hold-on-Me/

Just look at our most popular DJ today, David Gerta. Look up his name, and you will find over 25 samples from different people. What exactly does this show? Well, it shows that the talent, and so called originality in todays music, is not present. Back then, in the 80s, when a band such as the Scorpions wanted to record a song, they had to pick up instruments, make up the song, the notes to it, the lyrics. That is talent. Writing songs, playing instruments, being in a band. Now, thanks to sampling, we can get any old beat, remix it on a computer, and publish it in our own name.

It hurts to see this happening. It is so unfortunate that the real music had to go, but then again, what can you do? The mainstream media will continue to dominate the music being listened to today, and whether we like it or not, the real music is going to have to die someday. It is just sad to see it destroyed by what is so obviously crap. I, personally, am 15, and since 3 years ago, realised that after listening to a song called Lo ca by Ska Noel, that what I was listening to at the time was absolute junk.

I was embarrassed. I still am. How could I possibly have listened to such... such stuff. Luckily I had managed to remove the blind from my eyes, I had managed to escape the room dominated by the mainstream society and decide for myself what I wanted to listen to. Many people today fail to do that. It is sad. Truly it is. Luckily, I did it. And I can say today that I made the right choice. This, in itself, my story, is pure evidence of what is better. I have been to both sides, and have no regrets listening to rock and roll, heavy metal, and classic rock. It is probably one of the best decisions I have made in my life, along with taking up playing the guitar. I am self taught, and people say I am extremely talented for it. On the other hand, if I tried to make a beat up, I know that people would not look at me the same way in terms of talent.

I hope that this has given sufficient evidence to support the real music. I strongly oppose todays music, and thus, this is why my post in particular is so long. This is my complete and honest personal opinion on todays music, and why I despise it so much. I hope that I can make someone out there see that they are being controlled and told what to listen to. It is not right. It just isn't. You should have your own choice. Even if you don't agree with my taste in music, primarily rock and roll, go out and try another kind of music, like jazz, or classic roll. It can't hurt, can it?

That is all I have to say for my side. I beg you to oppose the motion.
