Traveling is much better than reading a book as you can experience things when you travel, although with reading, you are only able to imagine. Media has a strong influence on those who read, as they are more exposed to it. Traveling allows a person to be free, and careless towards superficial things. Einstein once said: "Information is not knowledge, the only source of knowledge is experience." Therefore, reading a book and attaining information through a written source is far less effective than traveling, experiencing, ad being hands-on. Additionally, when we travel the world, we discover new cultures, languages, points of view, and way of living, but reading such things is not as effective or beneficial.

Hmm, interesting. While I do love a good read, you can never, ever catch the full experience of becoming part of a culture with just pages. You don't get to taste the local cuisine, you don't get to participate in local native dances, and you don't get to hear the history of a people being told by a shaman. Traveling, while it is more expensive, broadens your horizons to different types of people and cultures. Read about the Pyramids, watch the History Channel and every documentary there is on them. But if you just read the book, you'll never be able to say 'Hey, yeah, I went to Egypt and saw Giza, the Pyramids, and the Sphinx!"

Well, I think that travelling is much better than reading books. Because, if you just keep reading the books you won't have as much fun as really going and seeing those stuff in real life. Example, you're just going on reading a book which is all about Egypt, and you just go on imaging the stuff. Have you never thought, that your imagination can be wrong. Well if you really go to Egypt and see the Giza, the Pyramids and all the great historic stuff there, you'll have more fun than just reading all those. And also, while reading, you might feel sleepy, but when you are really there an and seeing all those stuff, you'll have the best time, EVER! :-)

I was an exchange student in Romania for a year, and I'm almost completely positive I know more about the country than any book could tell you. When you travel, you experience everything, which stays with you a lot longer than anything you just read in a book.

It is really good when you interesting in somewhere or in something and you want to learn about it as well. The traveling helps you to understand the world better because as written in old sayings "to see once better than hear a hundred times" it is the same with reading because yes when you read you may feel all determined actions , described feelings but it will be better if you feel and to have a look with your own eyes the same episode in books. As scientists considered that the visual memory is better than imagination of reading. The well-traveled people remember the places better than people who have read about the same place. According to the Harry Lorine who have written the book "Phenomenal memory" emphasize that people remember forever the things which forced them to feel happy, to feel sad or hurt them when they feel it really with their own heart with the helps of visual followings even sounds and see it with their own eyes. Not just to read the episode where describes the love between Romeo and Juliet with passionate details viewers remember the pictures of actors and the place where it had happened because it impacts on them powerfully.

For learning about the modern day world, your better off traveling and experiencing things in person. A text book has chances of being biased and one sided anyway. If you travel, you have the opportunity to see ecosystem, environments, landmarks, museums, governments, economic situations, ect. first hand, for what they really are.

As for history, revert to text books, because we don't have time machines yet.

i agree with the statement, because traveling around the world is more easily to understand what u will read in the textbooks. people forget most what they read but they wouldn't forget what they saw.

By traveling around the world you will know much more about the country, its culture, people living in the country, the mentality of the country than just reading books, because you see everything with your own eyes, and impressions and experience remain in your memory of almost for all life.

I am a slow reader so I don't read much but I do travel a lot and it's opened up a whole new world for me and when I see a place on TV that I've been before I look it up .When I get more information about it ,this increases my knowledge of the world much more than I could ever get from a book.

My Social Studies Book tells Me that Thomas Edison invented the lightbulb, when Tesla did, it tell me that Alexander Gram Bell invented the telephone, when Antonio Mecci did.

Textbooks are sometimes filled with people's opinions on facts.Traveling is more better.

I would say that traveling to another country would be more realistic than reading about another country from a book.

Travelling can expose a person to not only the architecture but also the culture. One doesn't need a lot of money to travel. Yes, you can book 5 star hotels and shop and eat. But that kind of travelling is just "sight seeing", not real travelling and certainly not part of experiencing anything at all.

Traveling gives you a chance to experience life the way you want to, and so you can learn from the things that you go through. If you keep reading without experiencing you will never grow as a person and develop yourself. That's why traveling will help you turn into a wise and grown person.

READING A BOOK IS LIKE IS LIKE VIEWING THE WORLD THROUGH A KEYHOLE,IN ORDER TO FULLY EXPERIENCE IT , WE JUST HAVE TO SEE THE WORLD :) HOW DO U THINK OR GREAT ANCESTORS BECAME SO WISE BY JUST TRAVELING?? DO YOU THINK THAT A BABY LEARNT TO SAY 'MOM' BY READING A TEXTBOOK?? BY READING YOU GET KNOWLEDGE BUT BY TRAVELLING YOU GET WISDOM.

Side: TRAVELLING IS better then read

KNOWLEDGE IS REFERRED AS THE ABILITY TO ACQUIRE INFORMATION. BUT WISDOM IS THE ABILITY USE THIS ACQUIRED INFORMATION IN A JUDICIOUS WAY. READING A BOOK SURROUNDED BY THE FOUR WALLS OF YOUR ROOM DOES NOT MAKE YOU WISE. TO BECOME WISE YOU HAVE TO TRAVEL TO SEE AND OBSERVE THE NATURE

I think I would always side with experience being the greater way to understand something than simply reading. Don't get me wrong, with reading you can learn some understanding of a culture or person but to actually speak to them, to immerse yourself in a culture, brings about the greater understanding.

First of all, I want you to imagine two people. One of these two people is someone who has stayed at home for the rest of his life and devoted his years to reading books. The other has traveled all his life and dedicated his life to traveling. I mean, one's full of brains, the other's heart, eyes and life. Do you prefer to know that the sun is something bright, dazzling, warm, or is it the warmth left in your skin when you raise your head and close your eyes? Do you prefer to know that the wind is a breeze, or is it the warm wind that struck you in the face on a spring evening? Think about it. and the last thing i want to say is, When a traveler in our country told us about the cold in a town where he was visiting, he said: cats are freezing in the air when they jump from a roof to a roof. You've read this now. if you saw it with your eyes?

1) When you have book you can learn about different countries and culture in just one day , however you can't travel the world and learn different cultures in one day.

2) When you buy a book you use less time , money , and effort .

If it is a book about culturs and geography and whatnot, than the book is far better. You would need to single-handedly conduct polls, research large swaths of peoples and draw out intricate maps of the landscape as you travel in order to match the knowledge compiled in a half descent book about any particular area.

It's funny when people go someplace, stay in a westernized hotel for a weekend, and think they understand a country and however millions of people live there though.

If you only learned about the world through traveling you would only know a fraction of what you would know through reading. Not to say you shouldn't travel, you should if you get the chance, but it would be unpractical to rely on traveling as your primary means of education. Traveling is too time-consuming and too cost ineffective for that purpose.

Define "better"...better for who. No...test scores would drop!...lol.. I can have students memorize 10 facts while they are out playing in Italy and really experiencing and seeing culture. Studying a book geared towards the test is so much better. It would allow for the school to be considered "good" and continue receiving funding...lol... How crappy our system is!

I think it would work only in combination. In order to know where to go you have to read something about that country. Your enjoy of the country would be greater. For example, when I visited St. Petersburg I didn't think about history very much or great books such as 'Crime and Punishment' by Dostoevsky. But when I realized that I actually was at the same land as great people of the past. It thrilled me more than just being in this city. I really appreciate the words of St. Augustine who also compared traveling with reading: “The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” But, visa versa, who never read about overseas territories never understand fully the pleasure of traveling.

reading from book is much better than traveling cuz traveling will take more of ur time more of ur money and more tiredness .... but book wont do all these thing u dont need to be rich to by a book u dont need to be much free to read the book .... where u want and when u want u can read the book ,,, maybe 75% of people are not able to travel cuz they dont have money or time ......... so my idea is reading is much better than traveling :)

Going places will not give you a better understanding of the world. It will definitely give you an idea of what other cultures do, but it will not help you understand why the cultures do what they do, which is what truly understanding something means.

Textbooks go into the background of occurrences, seeing the world will mostly only give you information about the foreground.

Side: reading from book is better te

I think reading is way better than traveling cause I think traveling, first and foremost will take take a lot of money. Of course not all of us are rich. Sometimes we can't just afford the money so we read books. and going to a specific country, we all will just boast that we have gone their instead some people wouldn't have even understood the culture. So, reading books is much pleasure than having a long time travel.

Anything you prefer, both are useful. You can initially read from printed materials such as books and other travel guide then travel after learning things from it, or travel first then learn their culture at the same time using cultural books of their own. There are man printable travel guides and books online, you can have them reprinted at http://www.digitekprinting.com/.

Reading a book is better than traveling because when reading a book we can develop ideas with life experiences from the information we read. Reading is the best source of information, books have been around for hundreds of years, the pen and paper has been around a lot longer than airplanes and advanced means of transportation. Sometimes, you can learn about other people's experiences through their writings, and then you can apply the life lessons they shared and benefit from them.

Reading a book can give insights into a society and the inner workings of a culture that being a traveler may certainly not grasp.
