I'm wondering how you can be sure it's God keeping you from harm? It could just as well be the devil.. now before you say, the devil is evil, therefore he would cause you harm instead of keeping you out of harm, let me tell you a story that actually happened.

In the first world war a British soldier encountered a wounded German soldier, but just before shooting him he was struck by a deep feeling of compassion and let the German live. This act of mercy saved the German from certain death. Logically the German suspected it had to be an act of God, guiding the British soldier not kill him in cold blood. Later on he even went so far to claim God wanted him to survive to do God's divine work. That German soldier was Adolf Hitler.. plunging the world in yet another war, killing 60-70 million people.

If God did guide the Brit, then God is evil, since being all knowing would've give him the foresight into the future and thus knew millions would die. He'd would have known that "his" people would be systematically murdered by the millions.. even the innocent children. This all could've be prevented if the soldier didn't show mercy and killed Hitler right there and then.

The reality of things is that there is no God and people finally started to realize this as fact after being informed about the horrors of the concentration camps.

Not being harmed in an accident and thanking God for this is incredibly stupid, since the world is full of suffering.. why would God safe you and not a child fighting cancer or the thousands dying of malaria, aids or famine every single day?

Yes, of course. Your claim is a personal experience and therefore not evidence and so, I can dismiss it. Change the word "thirsty" into "Jesus", "God", "Thor" or "Unicorn" ... and still the burden of proof is on you. Why should I care that you're thirsty? Claiming to be a deity comes with a follow up, like "now, kiss my feet and surrender all your virgins to me so I can have my way with them" ... claiming to be thirsty is like equally intrusive in people's lives as claiming to be a sheet of toilet paper!

What does that exactly mean, respecting religion? Why should we respect religion? Should we also respect political ideology like fascism, communism, capitalism.. meaning we should not talk about what's wrong with these ideas? Religion, God and Jesus are ideas, created by primitive men, lacking any scientific knowledge and therefore we should not question it's validity?

I do not respect it at all. I respect any human willing to challenge their thinking and do the right thing without the thread of eternal punishment. I respect the people who fight tyranny, knowing their chance of survival are very dire and people how help the weak and hopeless. I respect the people searching the truth about our universe and share their knowledge to help humankind. Religion is evil and respecting it will make it more evil then it already is.

Believing in God isn't harmful per-say, however religion doesn't remind or warn their flock that the clergy isn't completely sure about God and all the fantastic stories portrayed in the Bible, so keep an open mind, because it might all be a load of crap, don't they? The Bible, Quran etc. doesn't ask the reader to follow the rules and guidelines at their discretion either and just wing it.

Religion is about having blind faith and accepting all the stories and the existence of God without having any doubt about it. And thus, live according to it's rules without question. Any doubt about them will get you at least banned from the local community, village or even your family. Religion will sentence you to eternal punishment and torture in hell for asking doubtful questions and if you are an unlucky sob, your family and former friends will help their God by killing you. This is the true face of religion and without God there wouldn't be religion.

Any system were followers are not allowed to doubt it, is very dangerous and became most clear in Germany. After the Nazis came to power, anyone doubting the Jews of being sub-human would end up in a death-camp with the Jews and all because some Germans and Austrians had blind faith that the Jews were vermin like rats and therefor needed to be destroyed. We all know how that played out, don't we? However there are still people believing without a shred of doubt that the holocaust didn't happen at all. Should we not tell these "holocaust deniers" they're wrong? Should we let such people spread their madness to children, risking yet another holocaust?

Religion is just as evil. It tells us to behave in immoral ways towards other religions or people without religion. It tells us how and when we're allowed to kill women, homosexuals, slaves, even our own children etc. It is discriminatory at its core and if you're not a follower, you too are vermin and your life is worthless.

You are free to disagree with this conclusion, but this only shows you don't know the religious texts well enough and just follow "your" religion because your parents followed it, because their parents (your grandparents) followed it and you were simply conditioned as a child not to question it, thanks to the help of the church and its religion. You really should read the book you use as a guideline for life since it will become clear your parents and grand parents did not because they too were conditioned as a child to do so. And while reading here's a tip (spoiler). The old testament is part of the Bible. It has always been and always will stay part of the Bible. However if you know what i'm talking about you either found a way to accept it without really knowing what you're accepting e.g. you are an complete idiot.. or you're a sociopath lacking compassion and like to murder in the name of God.

Without God there wouldn't be religion and without religion there would not be a system for psychopaths ruling the gullible, keeping them inline by killing the doubtful and the non-followers in gruesome ways and start wars and commit genocide and feel righteous because God commanded it!

That's why they call it placebo effect and not the prayer effect. Placebo effect can be reproduced without prayer, therefore prayer is not the trigger, but the brain being tricked into a state beneficial to healing the body. Our brain is enormously powerful and poisoning it with religious dogma is such a waste!

I'm sorry the hear about your dad, but have you ever asked God why he didn't save your dad? You did pray to him, asking to save your dad, not? Why didn't he? (Before you answer realize that God was able to save your dad, but didn't and you probably found a way to have peace his passing, but the bible is clear. Ask in prayer and you'll get anything you wish for.)

I think its sad you are so bogged down into believing prayer works, while there is no justification for it at all. The reason why you seem to do better at whatever you're doing is simple. It's because you are doing it over and over and bound to break through previous results.

If I'd like to become famous and have millions of dollars I will not get there sitting on my ass watching TV and not doing more then just praying to God every day. I need to get busy and work hard to reach that goal, aren't I, otherwise, everyone else would be rich and famous, right? Anyway, when I do become filthy rich and famous, I'm gone say it was because I'm special to God because evidently he listens to my prayers and the fame, the mansions, the cars and the millions, is proof of this, right?

No. Prayer does not work and it has been scientifically proven with double-blind testing decades ago already and still is researched today. Needless to say, religious folks always say they feel it does work and this is why atheists say religion is nothing more than a state of mind, just as any other e.g. being republican or democrat, a sportsfan, preferring red, green or pink, have a lucky number etc. etc.

However, if prayer was to work in some unverifiable way, then you need to challenge yourself by asking why God is listen to your prayer and not the prayer of the thousands of mothers, holding their children for the last time since she does have food to stop it from dying of starvation right this moment, while you read this argument?

Remember that God is against abortion, yet lets millions of children die every year of disease and starvation, only because they're not born in the US of A..

Read this verse carefully and then start praying to God and ask him to not help you get a new iPhone, but void of selfishness, ask him to help those mothers and starving children and irradiate famine. I really hope you'll succeed, if not.. accept the fact that prayer doesn't work because there is no one listening.

The theory of evolution describes why there is so much diversity between life forms on earth. Darwin didn't dare to state we humans are just a different species of apes at the time, because of the religion's grip on the "civilized" world. However, when DNA was discovered, much of Darwin's theory was proven to be correct, because after comparing DNA of different species of animals it revealed an ancestry.

For instance our DNA is much more like a chimpanzee then a rabbit, however rabbits and humans do share an ancestry as well, meaning all animals having 2 eyes, 2 ears, 2 nostrils and 1 mouth and has 4 limbs and a tail, share an ancestor in the tree of life. If you go back in time you'll see that dinosaurs had the same configuration as today's mammals, so this ancestor lived on earth even before them, meaning we need to look for this "missing link" maybe a half a billion years back, or even further. Finding such a creature is near impossible, however we know it had to exist since equally configured creatures are still here today.

Take a good look into the mirror and realize you are just like any other living creature, the next step in evolution created by a mix your parents DNA. You're not a exact copy of one or the other, but a mutated copy that started it's own branch of mutations. If you reproduce, your children will be a mix of your DNA and of your partner e.g. yet another mutation. If you give it enough time, say 100 million years, that branch may have been evolved into... who knows what, whoever we know thanks to Darwin, we also know that environment and habitat plays a mayor role in which state a species will evolve.

If you try to find a other explanation for this all, the scientific community welcomes you... unless you start with supernatural beings, e.g. God, Allah, Vishnu, Wodan, Zeus, because the "super" natural belongs into the realm of fantasy where you have unicorns, Pegasus, cyclops and the like.
