I respectfully disagree with your comment. Of course we all would have wanted for Johnny to do something else like knock them out or another solution, but imagine yourself being ion that situation, where you have a small amount of seconds to think of something since your best friends life is at risk. So if you think it deeply, Johnny isn't the one you should blame. Bob and his gang started it all, so sort of he deserved it.

In my perspective I think that Johnny was justified in killing Bob because of many reasons behind it. Although violence and killing is obviously not the answer, it was what he had to do to save his best friends life. If Johnny hadn't killed Bob, then Ponyboy would have been the one that ended up death, so it was up to Johnny, did he want Bob dead or his best friend? And since he didn't have much time to think of any other solutions, he just did what he did to save Ponyboy's life. And the intention that Johnny had by killing Bob wasn't negative at all, it wasn't much about hatred towards Bob but more of a good intention, to save Ponyboy. That is proven in the book, when Johnny keeps repeating to himself and Ponyboy that he just killed a person and murdered someone, so his intentions weren't bad at all. In addition to that, he also did it for himself, by killing Bob all the other Socs left running and scared, and if he hadn't done something like that then the other Socs would start to beat him up in any second. As a sum, Johnny isn't the one we should blame here, he would never do that if the Socs had come and start to almost kill his best friend. He really had no choice, there wasn't much time to think of any other solutions, so he just did it. Maybe now reflecting there could have been another solution for that situation, but if you were Johnny at that time I assure you that you wouldn't have thought of another solution in seconds.
