Bands, people working together as a TEAM, do compete and beat other opponent bands. Concert band is only music, however marching band requires physical control and mobility as well as musical and intellectual talents. Not only that, but marching band also fits exactly to the definition of a sport according to Google. It takes practice to play a sport and it takes even more practice and time to preform a superior show. Not to mention the skill involved with memorizing your sets, how many steps are between each set, memorizing the music, keeping form, knowing when there is a rest and on top of that playing an instrument. The instrument itself could also weigh a lot such as tubas, sousaphones, or, depending on your size, a baritone and during the entire show, apart from visuals or rests, you have to hold up the instrument.
