Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) delivered quite a speech to the National Review Institute over the weekend, declaring that Republicans "are and should be the party of the 47 percent," his party should embrace routine hostage strategies, and he still wants to privatize Social Security out of existence.

But for all of the right-wing senator's nonsense, this was the comment that warrants special attention. In this clip, at around the 37:06 mark, Cruz notes that the Senate has "two pending nominations, John Kerry and Chuck Hagel." Describing the nominees, Cruz added, "Both of whom are very prominently..."

After pausing for a few moments, the event's moderator said, "Anti-us?" Cruz responded that Kerry and Hagel are "less than ardent fans of the U.S. military."

Perhaps Ted Cruz would benefit from a reminder about the men he's attacking. John Kerry is a decorated war hero who was awarded combat medals including the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts. Chuck Hagel is a decorated war hero who was awarded combat medals including the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, two Purple Hearts, Army Commendation Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge.

Cruz, meanwhile, who apparently considers himself an "ardent fan of the U.S. military," has never worn a uniform, except maybe on Halloween.

I have a simple request of chickenhawks: try not to impugn the character of decorated war heroes who've done what you only like to talk about.

The Texas Republican has developed a reputation for delivering "bonkers" speeches, but even for him, Cruz's comments over the weekend were cheap and offensive.

Right-Wing Nut Claims Birth Control Pills Result In Tiny Dead Babies Littering The UterusThey may not be coming for your guns, but they might be coming for your birth control pills if this ever manages to gain any momentum. Radio host Kevin Swanson believes that birth control pills result in “these little tiny fetuses, these little babies, that are embedded into the womb. They’re just like dead babies. They’re on the inside of the womb. And these wombs of women who have been on the birth control pill effectively have become graveyards for lots and lots of little babies.”

Um, what? Anybody who’s been through high school-level human biology, or even a halfway decent sex-ed course or health class, knows that a fertilized egg implants onto the lining of the walls of the uterus, which is shed each month in the form of that most annoying blood women hate dealing with when there is no implanted egg. So there are no “little tiny fetuses” that stick to the inside of the wombs of women who take the pill.

In fact, hormonal contraception does three things: prevents ovulation, thickens cervical mucus (to make it harder for sperm to pass through), and makes uterine lining too thin for implantation should ovulation and subsequent fertilization occur anyway.

Furthermore, it’s generally accepted in the medical community that pregnancy doesn’t begin until an egg is implanted in the uterine lining. As much as 50% of all fertilized eggs in women fail to implant in the uterus, and no pregnancy occurs. The uterine lining is shed as it would be during any menstrual cycle, and the fertilized egg goes along with it. Oftentimes, a woman never knows she had a fertilized egg to begin with. This can happen whether a woman is on the pill or not; every fertilized egg does not result in implantation.

So, again, there are no “little tiny fetuses” embedded inside the wombs of women on the pill.

Other “lolwut” moments (or headdesk/facepalm moments) regarding women’s biology include:

Rush Limbaugh’s assertion that women take birth control pills based on how often they have sex. This was the Sandra Fluke story; he accused her of wanting taxpayers to pay for her birth control, because she couldn’t afford enough pills for all the sex she was having.Back in October 2012, Limbaugh also said that women on the pill feel sexier, and, alluding to the apparent sex appeal of both Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, are therefore more likely to vote Democratic. Of course, this speech was full of odd contradictions, such as the idea that ovulating women feel sexier, so women on cycles regulated by hormonal contraception are more likely to vote Democratic because of heightened sexual feelings. Given that women on the pill generally don’t ovulate, and don’t experience those hormonal fluctuations that come with ovulation, this makes no sense. In fact, one of the potential side effects of hormonal contraception is a reduced sex drive.

There is also, of course, Todd Akin’s famously ridiculous notion that when it’s “legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.” Because an egg and a woman’s cervix can distinguish between sperm that came from rape and sperm that came from consensual sex.

Similarly, back in 1995, Henry Aldridge of North Carolina said that rape victims don’t get pregnant because “during an attack, the juices don’t flow, the body functions don’t work and they don’t get pregnant.” Like others, he named an unspecified group of authorities in the medical field who supposedly had solid research to back this claim up.

And Alternet.org has a list of the top 7 most outrageous myths regarding female biology ever.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that Mr. Swanson would try to espouse the idea that women who are on birth control pills have all kinds of tiny, dead babies just littering the walls of their uterus. It’s merely the latest in a series of both hilarious and downright saddening and disappointing myths that abound regarding women’s biology.

Pennsylvania Republicans To Introduce New Election-Rigging Planast month, Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus called up “states that have been consistently blue that are fully controlled red” to rig future presidential elections by changing the way electoral votes are allocated. Under Priebus’ proposal, blue states such as Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania would stop awarding electoral votes to the winner of the state as a whole, and instead would award them one-by-one to the winner of each congressional district. Meanwhile, red states would continue to award 100 percent of their electors to the Republican. This plan appears to have lost steam, however, as several top Republicans in key states announced they will not support it.

Even as Republicans in key states such as Michigan, Ohio, Florida and Virginia came out against this election-rigging plan, however, Pennsylvania Republicans have been eerily quite. We now know why. According to the New Castle News a local paper in western Pennsylvania, Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi (R) will introduce legislation this month that will effectively give away a large chuck of Pennsylvania’s electoral votes to the Republican presidential candidate, regardless of who wins the state as a whole.

How This Election-Rigging Plan Works

Unlike the plan Priebus backs, the New Republican Plan would not tie electoral votes to congressional districts. Instead, it would award the overwhelming majority of Pennsylvania’s electoral votes proportionally according to the popular vote, with two additional electoral votes going to the winner of the state as a whole. If the New Republican Plan had been in effect in 2012, Mitt Romney would have received 8 of Pennsylvania’ 20 electoral votes, despite losing the state by a substantial margin.

The problem with the New Republican Plan is that it would only be enacted in blue states such as Pennsylvania — the Democratic candidate for presidential won Pennsylvania in every single election for the past two decades — while red states would continue to award all of their electoral votes to the Republican. Thus, the plan gives away Democratic votes to the Republican for free, while letting the Republican candidate keep all the votes they earn legitimately in other states:Why Republicans Are Likely To Back This Election-Rigging Plan

In 2011, both Pileggi and Gov. Tom Corbett (R-PA) backed the original Republican Plan to rig the presidential election by tying electoral votes to congressional districts. The plan died, however, after most of Pennsylvania’s Republican U.S. House members rebelled against it. The problem with the original election-rigging plan, from their perspective, is that it would have encouraged the Obama campaign to move resources out of safe Democratic districts and into districts currently represented by Republican U.S. Representatives. In other words, the Republican lawmakers feared that tying the presidential race so closely to congressional districts could cost some of them their own jobs.

The New Republican Plan, by contrast seems designed to allay this fear among Republican U.S. Representatives by keeping the presidential race entirely separate from congressional districts — thus allowing Republicans to steal away Democratic electoral votes without risking Republican U.S. House seats.

Republicans Could Ram Their New Election-Rigging Plan Through In Just Four Days

In an interview with ThinkProgress, state Rep. Mike Sturla (D-PA), the Democratic Policy Committee Chairman in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, explained just how quickly this plan could become law if Republicans decide to ram it through before opposition to the plan can fully mobilize. In short, if Pileggi introduces the plan on a Monday, Republican lawmakers could have it on Corbett’s desk by Thursday:

They could have it out of the House in three days and it could go over to the Senate and they could have it out of there in three days and it could go to the governor’s office and he could sign it. . . . The Senate can suspend the rules and have it passed in less than 24 hours. [The House] has to have a 2/3s majority to suspend the rules so usually we can at least make them do the three days.

As Corbett supported rigging the 2012 election to place Mitt Romney in the White House, he is all but certain to sign this new plan to rig the Electoral College if he is given the opportunity to do so.

Eight Senate Republicans vote against the Violence Against Women ActEight Republican senators voted Monday against proceeding to the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act (VAWA), a bipartisan bill to aid victims of domestic and sexual violence.

Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Mike Lee (R-UT), Tim Scott (R-SC), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Mike Johanns (R-NE), Rand Paul (R-KY), Pat Roberts (R-KS), and James Risch (R-ID) voted against advancing legislation to renew the 1994 law. Despite opposition from these eight lawmakers, the bill is expected to be approved in the Senate by the end of the week.

“Since we first passed the Violence Against Women Act nearly two decades ago, states have strengthened criminal rape statutes, and every state has made stalking a crime,” Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT), co-author of the bill, explained. “The annual incidence of domestic violence has dropped more than 50 percent. We have helped to provide victims with critical services like housing and legal protection. We need to remember that behind those numbers are thousands of lives made immeasurably better.”hough the Senate approved the bill with bipartisan support last year, House Republicans allowed the bill to die because of new protections for immigrants, Native Americans, and members of the LGBT community. The provision related to immigrants has been removed from the current bill, but is expected to be included as part of comprehensive immigration reform.

“Today’s vote brings us one step closer to finally renewing our national commitment to ending domestic violence,” Patty Murray (D-WA) said. “And while I’m encouraged by the renewed sense of bipartisanship on this issue in the Senate, and look forward to its passage in the near future, the ultimate fate of VAWA still lays squarely on the shoulders of Eric Cantor and John Boehner. They can either give in to the extreme voices of their caucus or they can stand with Democrats, moderate Republicans, and the many millions of Americans who believe there is no reason this critical bill should be put on the back burner or delayed any further

heres one reason Fox News Claims Solar Won't Work in America Because It's Not Sunny Like GermanyThanks to Fox News and its expert commentators, millions of Americans now understand the real, hidden reason why Germany's solar-energy industry is so much further along than ours. Turns out it has nothing to do with the fact that Germany's government has long supported the industry far more generously, with policies like feed-in tariffs that stimulate investment in green technologies. No, the real reason is much simpler, explained a trio of journalists on Fox & Friends: It's always sunny in Germany! The industry's future looks dim," intoned host Gretchen Carlson at the beginning of the segment, which was preserved for posterity by the liberal blog Media Matters for America. She and her co-host went on to ridicule Obama's "failed" solar subsidies, adding, "The United States simply hasn't figured out how to do solar cheaply and effectively. You look at the country of Germany, it's working out great for them." Near the end of the segment, it occurred to Carlson to ask her expert guest, Fox Business reporter Shibani Joshi, why it might be that Germany's solar-power sector is doing so much better. "What was Germany doing correct? Are they just a smaller country, and that made it more feasible?" Carlson asked.Joshi's jaw-dropping response: "They're a smaller country, and they've got lots of sun. Right? They've got a lot more sun than we do." In case that wasn't clear enough for some viewers, Joshi went on: "The problem is it's a cloudy day and it's raining, you're not gonna have it." Sure, California might get sun now and then, Joshi conceded, "but here on the East Coast, it's just not going to work."

Gosh, why hasn't anyone thought of that before? Wouldn't you think that some scientist, somewhere, would have noticed that the East Coast is far less sunny than Central Europe and therefore incapable of producing solar power on the same scale?

You would—if it were true. As Media Matters' Max Greenberg notes, it isn't. Not even remotely. According to maps put out by the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory, virtually the entirety of the continental United States gets more sun than even the sunniest part of Germany. In fact, NREL senior scientist Sarah Kurtz said via email, "Germany's solar resource is akin to Alaska's," the U.S. state with by far the lowest annual average of direct solar energy.
