It is a real test of our democracy when the will of the People is so clear yet the possibility of that will being unrealized is also clear. It has become a cliche to suggest that it is time for a change but history ebbs and flows and clearly the Bush/McCain tide is ebbing. Our elections are a test of the campaign staff's ability to communicate and react in a way that moves voters to action. Who are you most afraid of? Who would you prefer to have a beer with? Just as in the movie "The Candidate" style over substance and packaging a candidate like a box of detergent can lead to disastrous results. It's time for Obama but can he move the American People to vote their interests? Time will tell. In the future I'll breakdown the issues in the naive hope that the issues matter.

Sometimes a politician who is dearly loved and has served his constituents well stays a little too long. In Ted Steven's case it has long been well known that he is a bully, but when the bully is on your side who cares? Just like George Allen's Macaca moment, Ted Stevens has become an embarrassment to Alaska. Not because he made a mistake but because he became a cliche. Everybody knew what he was yet as long as it wasn't making the states residents look like fools it was tolerable. Now it's clear that Alaskans will have to choose between humiliation or reality. Unfortunately at a time like this an honorable man steps aside and takes an accounting of his blessings. In this case just as pride cometh before the fall, surely Ted Stevens pride will lead him to a very great fall. Such as it is, Alaskans really have no choice.

Having grown up represented by Frank Wolf, clearly the Commonwealth and the district has changed and its time to look to the future. Just as Barack Obama and Jim Webb (and soon Mark Warner) represent a changing of the guard, so should this term be Representative Wolf's last. The Eleventh Congressional District itself is an oxymoron. Comprised of many newcomers it doesn't represent the Old Dominion of the Sixties when I grew up in the region. Frank Wolf has been reelected time and time again because he has provided good constituent service, is a moderate and has not faced strong opposition. This year is different with the experienced and well known Gerry Connolly. Even a good representative such as Connie Morella in Maryland finds that when change is the order of the day it betters serves the district's citizens to have a member of the majority party as a representative. But the issues must be examined and in future posts I will break down the substantive differences between the two candidates.

Any native Virginian can look back at the Gubenatorial service of the two candidates and make a decision about how our Senate team should be comprised. It still goes back to the recent race between George Allen and Jim Webb. One represented Virginia's past and the other Virginia's future. Neither Jim Webb nor Mark Warner represent a repudiation of the good things in our proud history, they simply seem more forward-looking, more modern if you will. Jim Gilmore was removed as RNC Chair for his ineffective performance in 2002 and is simply not a great leader. Mark Warner has the vision and experience in business and as a political leader that best represents the future of the Commonwealth. Perception isn't everything but it it is telling in this case.

In the future I'll break down the issues.
