The U.K. Has experienced higher rates of gun crime since their ban on guns. This also holds true for other places with a ban on guns such as Chicago.
One country, it is interesting to note, that has one of the lowest crime rates is Switzerland, where approximately 1/2 of Swiss and is rank as the 3rd highest rate of private gun ownership per person and one of the lowest crime rates in the world. So banning guns doesn't help anybody.
I don't think everybody in the U.S. should have guns either. That's why we have background checks and the requirement for photo ID. To make sure the people who shouldn't have guns don't get them.
I think you are right that most illegal guns would come domestically.
I think it's important to note that Australia had a "Mandatory Buyback Program". It didn't matter if you liked the price or not. You just had to deal with it.
And finally, you say taking away guns from the average joe is going to make criminals not break into houses. I guarantee you, that if you ask a burglar if he had a choice of breaking into a house with no guns and a house with guns in it, if he is truthful, he'll pick the one without it.
The average citizen posses no threat to themself, because in order to do that they would have to point the gun at themselves or allow the intruder to get close enough to grab it. And the second case is virtually impossible because the point of a gun is to keep a safe distance from you and the assailant.
"America has the highest rate of gun crime in the world"
Honduras has the highest rate of gun deaths actually. But even if that was not true, that would only account for gun violence. Criminals can use knives, clubs, explosives, or even poison for that matter.
"Australia guns were subsequently banned and gun crime then plummeted showing that a ban on guns in America could well be the answer to reducing gun crime."
Firs of all, Australia is an island which is why it's reletively easy for Australia to prevent illegal guns from getting in. Second, crimes in general, such as robberies, rape, etc, have actually gone up in countries where guns were banned. Because surprise, criminals don't give a crap about rules.
"A common argument...is that a person would have no defense against an intruder. However,...it would be drastically more difficult for a potential criminal to get hold of such a weapon."
This is the part where you're argument goes down the drain. If it becomes more DIFFICULT for a criminal to aquire a gun but makes it IMPOSSIBLE for a law abiding citizen to aquire a gun, what does that mean for the law abiding citizen?
There are ways to reduce crimes. A couple of ideas I like are ensuring people get a high school education, teach people about gun safety, or community policing. Just remember, prisons don't hold guns, they hold people.
"Okay, if you're Catholic you don't believe in abortion, so you don't get an abortion."
Imagine you are telling someone that you don't like it when they commit murder. They say to you "Okay, If you don't like it, don't murder people." Are you going to let them keep murdering people?
That's what Christians hear when you say that.
I am probably a good person but I haven't taken the time to fill out my profile, so you'll never know! |
