People who do good things should be encouraged. If giving them bragging rights is enough to keep them busy doing good things, then that's a worthy investment. I could endure a little bragging if more people were doing good things. Calling them bad people just because they wanted to feel proud about what they did discourages them, and results in less good things being done.
You are describing someone who has not done any good, but claims that they have, which is not what the debate is about. If one would actually do very good deeds, like doing voluntary work against racism, they deserve to do some bragging about it. If they really did something good, it wont feel like they are bragging when they tell you about it.
The case should be decided GMO by GMO, case by case. There are already many GMOs proven to be harmless and very beneficial. Removing this tool from out scientific portfolio is a big step backwards, and making all GMOs legal without exceptions is equally foolish.
