I agree with you because if he wouldn't murder the Socs they could be hurt. It's good that he defended his friend and himself.
The murder wasn't accidental because he killed the Soc on purpose to protect himself. He wanted to do it to help Ponyboy.
I think that Johnny was justified for killing the Soc, it was self-defense to protect Ponyboy and himself. At first, he never thought about killing the Soc until he started drowning Ponyboy and hurting him, he did that because if he wouldn't they would be the ones getting hurt. Maybe it wasn't the best decision but it definitely saved them.
