As humanity shapes the world and itself with its evolving technologies, it tends to create versions of the world and itself that are far improved. While some may claim that technological progress can be utilized to further foul or unjust ends such as terrorism and cyber warfare, this is clearly an improper syllogism; “many weapons and methods of attack are derived from technological advancement” and “progressively advanced weapons continually deal more damage than previously” most certainly does not equate to “all progressing technologies lead to progressively worse realities being enacted.” Regardless of the state of advanced technologies, humans with nefarious purposes have always managed to cause harm to others and the world; therefore, the potential negative outcomes associated with misuse of technology should be overlooked, especially when the observable prospect for global prosperity associated with technological progress is considered. For instance, progression in the research of ANNs (artificial neural networks), a subclass of artificial intelligence, has lead to medical benefits such as earlier detection of diseases as medical data can be more effectively managed; analytical benefits such as weather prediction, data sorting, and complex calculations based on data interrelation; and entertainment value both in conceptualizing the fact that humanity nears the point of intelligently engineering its own eclipse and consuming the fruits of current progress such as Google’s Deep Dream program. Additionally, technological progress is a useful tool and lens through which humanity learns to understand itself. Advancements in global connectivity technologies such as fibre optic cabling, social media, and the prevalence of cell phone signal sources allows for the mixing of cultures and near constant connection to information. People across the globe can connect with each other to learn the ways of other cultures at any time, perpetuating an increase in acceptance of others and understanding of humanity as a whole. Readily accessible information of all sorts aids in personal study and perception for billions of humans throughout the world; as more people receive access to ever-improving information technologies, the average world intelligence and understanding increases, leading to an avalanche effect of prosperity. The overall progress of technology is the strong force leading to furthered progress of humanity as a whole and our evolution as a collective intelligence, a force that is ultimately nothing less than wonderful.
