No one should put employees in a position where they must decide whether or not to chip in for a gift for the boss. Even if you are not getting a raise, there are ways to reward staff member for a job well done that cost practically nothing. If the boss is a good guy, get him/her a card and write a few nice words. But NO, you shouldn't go in on a Christmas gift for the boss. Hold your ground and hang onto your money.
If you've worked hard all your life and suddenly find yourself unemployed due to the economy or due to circumstances beyond your control, then applying for, and accepting unemployment benefits is a right. Each state may have its own regulations with regard to how the benefits are distributed, but looking for a new job is usually high on the list of "must do" activities. If you are a talented and experienced individual, you may get job offers right away -- but that doesn't mean you should accept the first, second or third offer that comes your way. You have every right to milk the benefits until they run out -- OR -- until YOU are ready to return to the workforce. You've worked hard. This is like a "paid vacation," something you're not likely to have anytime soon after you begin working again.
I used to live and work in Morgantown and yes ... WVU IS a big party school. Considering WVU is located in the middle of nowhere (it's at least a 90-minute drive to Pittsburgh, the nearest big city), there's nothing else to do there EXCEPT PARTY. The big activity/entertainment when I lived there was burning sofas on the streets of the Sunnyside area and Fraternity Row. And when the football team won -- look out. It was party city .... for days! Go Mountaineers! You know how to party hearty!
