The knee-jerk response is to say "no!" because it all came from greed, mismanagement, and lack of oversight and regulations. But the sad truth is that the economy truly will fail if our financial institutions fail.

It is imperative, however, that there be severe restrictions on CEO salaries and golden parachutes. Also, there must be an oversight panel that keeps track of and approves of how every penny is spent. The original bailout was an unfettered blank check, which is the same as giving a sub prime loan to an individual who can't afford to make the payments. It is this kind of irresponsibility that started the whole downfall!

"The first few hours were intense and contentious, participants said, marked by shouting over executive pay and a last-minute Democratic request for a fee on the financial services industry to cover the cost of the bailout program."

I trust Barack Obama and my Democratic representatives to make sure that the bailout protects and serves the taxpayers. Yes, Main Street, not Wall Street.

Sarah Palin, the Republican candidate for Vice President, wasn't there. WTF? If we wanted to hear what Giuliani had to say the guy would have been able to stay in the race a little bit longer. A colossal blunder on McCain's part.

“Would you have any difficulty finding an 84-year-old guilty of a crime if you knew that a conviction might result in a prison term?”

Curious that sending Ted Stevens to jail at the age of 84 is an issue, but where's the beef about sending him to congress at that age? In the video, Mark Begich talks a great deal about the future of Alaska. Is Stevens really in a position to talk about the future?

This is also another deal breaker for me, (although, to keep things in perspective, veteran's benefits are a no-brainer). What kind of hubris does it take to be that old and run anyway? Suggests a kind of arrogance to me, or worse yet, senility, and all the poor judgment that goes along with that kind of mental deterioration. Issues aside, the average life expectancy for an American male at present is 75.4 years, it just doesn't make sense to gamble on being around long enough to make a difference!

TPMtv at Netroots Nation: Mark Begich

This is kind of a deal breaker for me, and for I imagine many patriotic voters: Stevens voted against educational benefits for veterans of the Iraq war because it's a volunteer army? Huh?

"I think supporting our veterans, especially those who felt the calling to service, is not a controversial issue. It's troubling that Senator Stevens is trying to make a false distinction between what our country owes veterans of today and veterans of wars past." Matt Browner Hamlin

Give this post a thumbs up if full veterans benefits are an essential, urgent priority.

Tingle's experience is limited to professional candidate and casino manager. His resume, his aspiration to the Senate, is an insult when compared to the gravitas of a man of Reed's stature. His website is pure Myspace mentality. There is a huge picture of Reagan, the Virgin Mary, and McCain and Palin.

This is his assessment of Jack Reed: SENATOR JACK REED'S VOTING RECORD IN THE UNITED STATES SENATE IS OUT OF TOUCH WITH THE NEEDS AND CONCERNS OF THE AVERAGE, HARD WORKING, BLUE COLLAR RHODE ISLANDER.

Mr. Tingle, have you read Senator Reed's bio? Do you know that his father was a school janitor and fought in WWII? Did you read about his concern for the unemployed who have fallen on hard times under the Bush administration? Do you know that "In response to a request led by U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), the President today directed the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to release the remaining $120.7 million from the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) contingency fund – just days before the end of the fiscal year when the fund was due to lapse.", and that "This emergency funding will allow more states to deliver LIHEAP benefits to people in need and prevent thousands of working families and seniors in Rhode Island from having their utilities shut off.” Did you know that he is concerned with taxpayer protection and reimbursement in the wake of the Bush buyout plan? And this is all within the last month!

As a casino supervisor, who represents the house, how are your interests connected WITH THE NEEDS AND CONCERNS OF THE AVERAGE, HARD WORKING, BLUE COLLAR RHODE ISLANDER? Do you want them all to win big at your casino?

Get a grip and familiarize yourself with the issues and who's doing what for whom. Better yet, go to a gamblers' anonymous meeting and familiarize yourself with the shattered lives of average, hard working citizens.

"Reed, Washington leaders agree, speaks with authority.

'Everyone listens to Jack,” says Kennedy, second-ranking Democrat on Armed Services.

Says Sen. Chuck Hagel, Republican from Nebraska: 'He is one of the most dedicated, committed, thorough, thoughtful members of the United States Senate. He studies the issues, he knows what he’s talking about, he always makes a contribution. He’s always very respectful, very civil. He handles himself very well. And everybody likes him.'" High praise from a Republican in partisan times!

What impresses me about the buzz about Jack Reed, is his "humble", "civil", all-around good guy personality, coupled with his formidable authority and brilliance. A compilation of adjectives culled from the press, leaves one with the impression that he is a good man with a wealth of knowledge on many issues, and valuable experience earned by fighting for those issues. I know this might sound vague or rhetorical, but seriously, it's a personality that is rare and absolutely essential to take note of in a world of political shenanigans, and Rove-like technicians.

He turned down the possibility of VP, before he was even asked, but while many saw him as the perfect choice. Rhode Island is where he was born and raised, and Rhode Island is where he wants to continue to serve. Commitment and loyalty supersede ambition.

He reminds me of the television character, West Wing's President Bartlett. VP? This man has the strength of character and all the requisite experience for the office of President of the United States.

Also, Kelleher and Republican confusion aside, another plus sign in Baucus's favor is his area of expertise. At DSCC.org (Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee),

"For 28 years, Senator Baucus has served on the powerful Senate Finance Committee. Currently Max is Chairman of the Committee. This position is important to his home state of Montana, and America because the committee has jurisdiction over taxes, Social Security, Medicare, health care programs, and international trade. The Finance Committee is also responsible for examining all budget and tax plans that come before Congress."

All the pertinent money issues are in there. It the right type of experience at the right time.

“I don’t know how it happened,” Mr. Kelleher, 85, said of finishing ahead of five challengers in the Republican primary in June. “I guess they finally said, ‘That old bastard’s right.’ ”

The state Republican Party chairman, Erik Iverson, is less charitable. He even refused to allow Mr. Kelleher to speak at the party’s convention in June. Mr. Iverson suggested that primary voters were confused in selecting Mr. Kelleher, though he granted that Mr. Kelleher’s name was probably the most widely known because of his 15 or so other bids for various offices over the last half century as a Republican, a Democrat and a Green.

“Bob’s ideology, with the exception that he’s pro-life, doesn’t even remotely resemble the platform of the Montana Republican Party,” Mr. Iverson said.

Clearly, the Republicans aren't going to vote for Kelleher. Baucus has 67% of the votes, so it's kind of a done deal.

What I don't see discussed elsewhere, although there isn't a whole lot of press on this race, is the fact that Kelleher is 85 YEARS OLD. Given the flack McCain takes for his age (read: ancient!), it's odd that he got the nomination based on that negative criteria alone. Kelleher may truly be a maverick, but, heaven forbid, he might not even live until January.

Baucus is a popular incumbent. The "confusion" of primary voters on the Republican ticket, and the shoe-in status of this and other Democratic candidates for the senate i.e, Warner in Virginia, reflects the paucity of electable Republican candidates, in my opinion, due to the Bush drag on their coattails.

And one more thing, just to clear up some confusion over on youtube.com. If you search under "Mark Warner", there appears several videos by someone calling themselves "warner08", similar to and as bizarre as the one below. If you view as many as you can stomach, you finally get that these are actually pro-Gilmore supporters. Huh?

What are you trying to say? Who does this help? And How? I don't want to go all ad hominem on anybody, but Hon, this just adds to the already pathetic nature of Gilmore's campaign.

Everybody's got a video camera these days. To coin a familiar former slogan: It's not the camera, Stupid. (It's the message?)
