A strong argument for that music is a public interest objective is the following: God made the world in 6 days. In the seventh he relaxed and listened to some divine music... :)

How important are the performing arts and art in general for our lives? That's the question.

If people could live in our days without that, then it is not of "public interest".

If not...

I understand. So, the patrons should be a kind of sponsors. Good point.

And why, in the name of God, a patron would give money to some artist?

How a patron would choose who to give money and who not to? On what criteria? No music labels, no filters. No filters, no mega shows, no big concerts, no marketing (most of the artists are not good at that), no advertising, no nothing. Just hundred of thousands of bands and singers performing free on the Internet. As a question: How many new bands are you discovering each day (if one per day, to choose among one hundred thousand groups you will need 273 years). And there are more than 100.000 bands singing in English, each one with more than 10 songs... Some good, some excellent and... a lot of garbage (obviously depending on each person taste).

There are a lot of people earning money in the industry. From sound engineers, composers, text writers to equipment production factories with their employees. They have to be payed too.

But, maybe you have already thought at a system that could make things go round in the new paradigm (public not paying for the music). Please illuminate us!

It is a good idea. Let's ask the musicians not to ask for money for their songs. Internet should be also free. Why to pay? And why would not we all give for free the things that we are doing now for our money? This way we could eradicate poverty. If we abolish the money can you imagine that Bill Gates will be our equal. And not only him.

When all the people will say "I don't need your money Mr. Gates" then all the millionaires from this earth will become common people.

Only one question is bothering me. Why to start by asking other people not to ask money for what we want them to do for our benefit and pleasure?

Why don't we do first this step and offer all the people in the world the things we are good at, but this time... for free?

Definitely classical music.

Most of the modern genres are having their roots in it.

It is true that classical music is not for the non-initiated, but as we grow older and we acquire more life and emotional experience we accept and we start to feel connected to this complex, elevated, subtle, noble and mystical world of classical harmonies.

It is a mysterious phenomena as love is. Each age feel the love in a different way and love the music in a different register.

Home computers sales and Internet providing businesses are so successful mostly due to the file-sharing.

All the computer parts prices should include a small "copyrighted media" tax.

Also the Internet providers should include in their monthly plans such a tax.

Also the devices that can be used to play and/or produce a potentially illegal copy of a copyrighted material should include this tax. The media (blank CD, DD, blue ray) could be included in the list.

In addition to that, the copyrighted media should receive a percentage from the advertising revenues associated to their contents.

This might be a way to keep file-sharing alive and to make-it legal.

Such a tax could also make things right in what concerns taking the money only from AOL, Yahoo and other media providers while the illegal file-sharing is not generating any revenues for the production and distribution companies.
