You weren't wrong. We see those people at intersections here in Houston. They're not there for the food, or for jobs, or for anything else except money. They're professional panhandlers.
A number of us do community work here in Houston. We've come to know the difference between the homeless and these people (who give the homeless a bad name).
We've actually tried to bring some of these people to shelters for food, clothing and quarters, but they refused. They were much more content to stay there.
Generally, these folks panhandle around overpasses. They have a pile of stuff, that looks like bedding, or some type of ragged backpack.
The assumption that most drivers-by come to is that these poor people are sleeping under the overpasses.
I have seen people sleeping under the interstate (and in another life, have done it myself). But I have never seen these panhandlers sleeping under the overpasses. When the sun goes down, they mysteriously disappear, with their stuff.
There are needy folk who live under overpasses, and sometimes panhandle. An experienced eye (and ear) can come to learn the difference.
Tom Udall was (is) an intelligent and effective congressman. Yes, he butted heads with conservatives, but he stuck to his guns. When I lived in New Mexico, I expected him to be a second-generation political hack, riding on the coattails. Instead I saw him as a thoughtful, dedicated statesman. A good senator. Probably one of the best. His political acumen was born in the cauldron of New Mexico politics, which in complexities, is second only to Louisiana.
Yet,even with the greenies, and the "patrons (old Spanish families)," and the Republicans, and the opportunists, the old-time Democrats, new Democrats and even Republicans, Udall has a reputation of fairness, intelligence, and responsibility to his office.
I no longer live in New Mexico, but were I there, I'd certainly be voting for Udall.
Muhammad Yuni (Grameen Bank) certainly needs to be considered for his unique approach to social consciousness.
What a ridiculous argument. Children are color blind anyway, unless we adults instill that bias in them.
First, race, as I understand it, is determined by the amount of melatonin (sp?) in our skin. Melatonin is a product of environment. So where's the argument?
Is it okay for a Norwegian with very little melatonin to adopt an Italian child with olive skin (or the reverse for that matter).
Is it okay for an Indian (who are classified as Caucasian) to adopt a Malaysian child (who are classified as Asian).
Please. If there are any troglodites out there who see this as something that even needs to be discussed, they need to return to their caves and hibernate. They're on the endangered species list anway (a good thing in this case).
There's an old addage that says you "can't legislate morality," and I think there are some things that can't be legislated. Prostitution is going to exist whether or not we legalize it. There's a reason it's called "the world's oldest profession."
However, I suppose there could be some type of taxation levied, but I fail to see how it could be enforced, unless the prostitutes were required to work in "legitimate" brothels.
Would that not be restriction of trade?
Of course! What a wonderful, exciting thing to do. We need to renew that creative, pioneer spirit that formed out country anyway. I would love to be a pioneer.
A person's religious beliefs and therefore his or her prayers are personal and sacrosanct, unless that person chooses to divulge the specifics.
Is it so important in this era of information what words passes between a person and his creator. Anything less is a violation of religious and personal liberty.
If his prayer was sincere and honest, then why not? His prayer is an insight into his own aims and intentions. And as a globally recognized world figure, it is even more important to understand the man, his faith, and his motivations.
Additionally, people have a right to know what are the deepest thoughts of this man who may lead the world.
There is absolutely no question that Barack Obama will be the next president of the United States.
Set aside his charisma. Set aside his progressive stances.
What matters this time is that Americans are ready for a change. Hilary Clinton probably would have made it a closer race, but even with Clinton running for president, the American people know that the country needs fresh, new leadership, with new ideas, and a new way of looking at things.
And it's not only the Americans. Obama's election to the presidency will send a message to the rest of the world that the U.S. wishes to lead the world by example, not by heavy-handed military muscle.
I am probably a good person but I haven't taken the time to fill out my profile, so you'll never know! |
