I've studied this as part of the research for my TOK presentation, and a belief in Heavan can make people calmer when undergoing major surgery. However, I also found that belief in an afterlife can result in fatalism and less motivation for people to improve their lives. Marx wrote that peasants in Russia wouldn't try to fight for their rights and try to improve their lives as they believed that their suffering in this life would be rewarded in the next.
